July and August Are the Toughest Months of the Year on Your Air Conditioner

After more than 29 years diagnosing and repairing air conditioning systems throughout Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Newnan, and surrounding Georgia communities, I’ve learned one thing: July and August separate healthy HVAC systems from neglected ones.

During these months, your air conditioner often runs for hours at a time with very little rest. Every component is under maximum stress, and small problems that went unnoticed in the spring can quickly turn into expensive breakdowns.

One of the biggest problems I see is lack of preventive maintenance.

A dirty outdoor condenser coil traps heat, forcing the compressor to work much harder than it should. As the compressor struggles to reject heat, electrical amperage increases, operating temperatures rise, and unnecessary wear is placed on one of the most expensive components in your system.

A dirty indoor evaporator coil restricts airflow and reduces the system’s ability to absorb heat from your home. Low airflow can also be caused by clogged air filters, blocked return vents, closed supply registers, or shrubs and vegetation restricting airflow around the outdoor unit. All of these conditions reduce efficiency and place additional stress on your equipment.

I also find weak capacitors, worn condenser fan motors, failing blower motors, low refrigerant caused by leaks, loose electrical connections, and dirty drain lines that can shut a system down when you need it the most.

The important thing to remember is that air conditioners rarely fail overnight. Most systems give warning signs first—longer run times, reduced cooling, higher electric bills, unusual noises, weak airflow, or rooms that never seem to get comfortable.

Finding these problems early is almost always less expensive than waiting for a complete breakdown during a Georgia heat wave.

At John’s Heating, Cooling, and Appliance Repair, I personally answer the phone. When you call, you’ll speak directly with Master HVAC Technician John A. Davis, bringing over 29 years of real-world HVAC experience diagnosing and repairing residential air conditioning systems, heating equipment, commercial refrigeration, and HVAC installations.

If your air conditioner hasn’t been serviced this year, there’s still time before the hottest part of the season is behind us. A thorough inspection today may help prevent an emergency repair tomorrow.

After-Hours Air Conditioning Repair — Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

Tonight we received an after-hours emergency AC repair call from a new customer who was having trouble with their air conditioner. Another HVAC company had been out the day before and replaced the capacitor because they believed that was the problem.

The next day, the customer was still having issues. The air conditioner would run for a while, then stop cooling, and later start cooling again. These types of problems can be frustrating because the system may appear to work at times, but something is causing it to struggle when the outdoor temperature rises.

When we arrived, we took the time to properly diagnose the entire system instead of simply changing another part. After 29 years of hands-on HVAC experience, we know that good diagnostics start with looking at the equipment and finding the actual cause of the problem.

During our inspection, we found the outdoor condenser coil was completely covered with dirt and debris. A dirty condenser coil can restrict the unit’s ability to release heat, causing the outdoor unit to overheat during the hottest part of the day. This can lead to poor cooling, nuisance shutdowns, increased stress on the compressor, and expensive repairs if ignored.

We cleaned the condenser coil, checked the refrigerant system, verified operation, and the air conditioner was back to cooling properly.

This is why experience matters in HVAC. Replacing a part may solve a problem when that part has failed, but a complete diagnosis means understanding the entire system and finding the reason the equipment is not working correctly.

At John’s Heating, Cooling, and Appliance Repair, we believe in repair-first diagnostics. We take the time to find the cause, explain what is happening, and provide the right solution.

One of the most overlooked causes of HVAC system failure is a restricted or neglected air filter. In real field diagnostics, airflow restriction is one of the leading contributors to evaporator coil freezing, blower motor overheating, and system efficiency loss.

When airflow is reduced, the evaporator coil can drop below freezing and ice over, causing a complete loss of heat transfer. At the same time, the blower motor operates under higher static pressure, increasing amperage draw and long-term thermal stress on the motor windings.

Over time, this condition can lead to premature blower motor failure, capacitor stress, and in some cases compressor strain due to abnormal operating pressures.

There is no universal replacement schedule for filters. Replacement frequency depends on system runtime, indoor air quality, pets, occupancy, and dust load. Many homes require changes every 30–60 days, while others vary significantly.

Proper HVAC maintenance is based on airflow conditions—not fixed timelines.

This week reminded me why accurate HVAC diagnostics matter.

A homeowner contacted us after being told by multiple companies that their older air conditioning system needed to be replaced. When I inspected the system, I found it was low on refrigerant, but the biggest problem was that the condenser coil was completely packed with dirt. The ac unit couldn’t get rid of the heat as it moved through the condenser coil.

After a thorough cleaning, proper service, and addressing the actual issues, their air conditioner was back to cooling the house again.

Not every older system needs to be replaced. Sometimes it needs an experienced technician willing to take the time to find the real problem.

At John’s Heating, Cooling, and Appliance Repair, that’s the approach we’ve followed for nearly 30 years. We believe in honest recommendations, accurate diagnostics, and repairing equipment whenever it makes sense.

A few days later, the customer left us a five-star review saying other companies wanted to replace the system, but all it really needed was a proper cleaning.

That’s why we do what we do.

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling, don’t assume replacement is your only option. Give us a call first.

When your air conditioner quits on a 95-degree Georgia afternoon, you don’t care about sales pitches. You want someone who can find the problem and fix it.

That’s been my approach since 1997.

For more than 29 years, I’ve been diagnosing and repairing air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, walk-in coolers, walk-in freezers, commercial ice machines, and refrigeration equipment throughout Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Newnan, and surrounding Georgia communities.

Many of the calls I receive start the same way:

“My AC isn’t cooling.”

“My walk-in cooler is getting warm.”

“My ice machine stopped making ice.”

The real challenge isn’t replacing parts. The real challenge is finding the cause of the problem.

At John’s Heating, Cooling, and Appliance Repair, we believe in a repair-first approach whenever practical. Sometimes equipment needs replacement. Other times, a proper diagnosis can save a homeowner or business thousands of dollars.

Whether it’s an emergency AC repair, a commercial refrigeration breakdown, or a complete HVAC installation, our goal remains the same: diagnose it correctly, repair it properly, and treat people fairly.

Thank you to everyone who continues to trust us with your HVAC and refrigeration needs.
