How to prepare your products during Hurricane Dorian:
Anyone with a modular ramp on their home should secure the ramp and/or weight it down. If you have small ramps by your doors that are not screwed down, store them inside until after the storm.
Anyone with an outdoor stairlift will need to securely cover the lift. Rope, straps, or cording may be necessary to keep the cover from blowing away. Lift should be parked at the upper landing and disabled before covering. Locate On/Off switch and turn unit OFF. Locate charger and unplug from the wall outlet.
If needed, most machines will allow the chair to operate for a limited number of trips during a power outage. Refer to the user manual and use sparingly and cautiously. Once batteries get to a certain point, they will no longer be rechargeable and will require replacing. If you have an electrical generator available, you can temporarily plug the stairlifts charger into the generator. The machine must be turned on and should only charge for 1-2 hours before unplugging from generator. Monitor your charger and when you see the green LED, the batteries are full. When not using the machine, leave turned OFF. Only turn ON when in use until power is restored. Once power has been restored, plug stairlift charger back into home outlet. Turn stairlift back on via on/off switch. Allow to charge for 1 hour before use.
Anyone with an indoor stairlift should follow the recommendations above to preserve their batteries.
Anyone with an outdoor platform lift or elevator should park the platform halfway up to the upper landing. For AC powered machines - unplug the unit. Battery, or DC, powered machines should be turned off via the breaker and/or emergency stop switch.
Do not get inside of an AC powered lift if a loss of power is expected. If needed, DC powered machines are designed to allow for usage during a power outage. Refer to the user manual and use cautiously. If you have an electrical generator available, you can temporarily plug your lift into the generator to recharge the batteries. Monitor your charger and when you see the green LED light, the batteries are full.
Anyone with equipment that is only plugged in to charge should fully charge their equipment now. Use sparingly if experiencing a loss of power.
