Heavy Equipment Technician

Standard Heavy Equipment Repair Technician at Cain's Mechanical LLC in Agawam, MA

Job Title: Heavy Equipment Technician (Standard / Journeyman Level)

Reports To: Service Director

Location: Agawam, MA shop/yard primary; field service travel across Massachusetts and Connecticut using one of our field service trucks

Employment Type: Full-time, non-exempt (hourly with overtime eligibility)

Compensation Range: $36–$50/hour ($55,000–$100,000 base annualized, plus overtime) + performance bonus (tied to productivity, safety, and first-time fix rate) + benefits (health insurance, tool allowance, company truck use for field calls).

Purpose: Perform routine to intermediate-level diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, and inspections on heavy equipment (rental fleet and client-owned machines) to ensure reliability, minimize downtime, support high fleet utilization, and deliver excellent customer service that drives repeat business and contract renewals.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Preventive Maintenance & Routine Service (15% Focus)
Execute scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) on rental fleet and client machines per manufacturer guidelines and company standards.
Perform oil/filter changes, fluid checks and top-offs, greasing/lubrication, belt/hose inspections, battery tests, air filter service, and basic adjustments.
Conduct fluid sampling (oil analysis/S•O•S style) and visual/hydraulic/under carriage inspections; report findings clearly.
Complete pre-rental checkout inspections and post-return damage assessments to maintain fleet readiness and utilization targets.

2. Diagnostics & Repairs (30–40% Focus – Hands-On Core Work)
Diagnose and repair common to moderate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues using service manuals, basic diagnostic tools (multimeters, pressure gauges, scanners), and visual troubleshooting.
Replace or repair components such as filters, hoses, belts, starters, alternators, hydraulic lines/cylinders, brakes, tracks/tires, and attachments.
Assist Lead Technician on more complex jobs (engine rebuilds, major hydraulics, transmissions) by preparing parts, tools, and workspace.
Perform post-repair testing: Start-up checks, operational tests, and road/functional verification to confirm the fix before releasing equipment.

3. Field Service & Mobile Repairs (50% Focus)
Respond to field service calls and emergency repairs at client job sites using field service trucks.

Purpose: Drive lead generation and client relationships for rental growth; handle core accounting/financial tasks (AR/AP, job costing, reporting, fleet tracking) and basic compliance to maintain clean books, strong cash flow, and data for scaling decisions.

Key Responsibilities
Business Development (40–50%)
Generate and qualify leads (contractors, municipalities, utilities in Western MA/Southern VT) via calls, emails, referrals, and networking
Build relationships; assist with proposals, rentals, maintenance contracts, and upsells from service clients
Track pipeline in CRM; gather market intel for fleet expansion
Goal: Support 5–10 new accounts in Year 1

Accounting & Financial Management (35–40% – Expanded Focus)
Manage daily finance in QuickBooks: Process AR/AP, invoicing (repairs + rentals), payroll, job costing (track labor, parts, equipment per job/project)
Reconcile bank/credit card statements monthly; track cash flow, customer deposits, and receivables aging
Prepare monthly reports: P&L, balance sheet basics, cash flow statements, rental utilization (per-machine revenue, depreciation schedules), and fleet metrics (maintenance costs, asset tracking)
Assist with budgeting/forecasting: Compile data for annual budgets, monitor variances (parts, fuel, labor), input pro formas for equipment loans/leasing (70–80% financed)
Handle sales/use tax on rentals (MA/VT), depreciation entries, vendor payments, and basic cost analysis (e.g., margins on service vs. rental, parts markup)
Flag issues, support CPA coordination for taxes/audits, and maintain accurate asset records for financing

Compliance & Risk Support (10–15%)
Track renewals (business licenses, sales tax filings, insurance certs, DOT/OSHA basics)
Manage pre-rental inspections, certificates of insurance for clients, and basic claims paperwork

Required Qualifications
2–5 years in sales support, bookkeeping, admin, or related (construction/equipment/rental a plus)
