PSA for possible freeze.

ATTENTION: If your outdoor fan in not running and the unit is making a humming sound, the unit is likely in defrost mode. During defrost the outdoor fan shuts off. The compressor will remain running while the ice melts off. The unit can make more noise than normal during defrost. Do not turn off the system, allow it to run through it's cycle, 10 minutes or less, and it will switch back to normal heating.

You should not need to thaw the unit with water unless the top of the unit is covered over with ice. This is the ice referred to. This doesn't need any attention yet.

With the temps this low, your heat pump will freeze more than normal. The normal defrost cycle will keep the ice melted from the coil, but the top can freeze over preventing air flow. If the top of the outdoor unit ices over, you can melt the ice with a water hose.
