This is a new hogwire deck rail I did in my neighborhood. The old railing was rotten cedar so the customer opted for pressure treated wood instead. The stairs were repaired and some structure was added to make them more stable. This was a fun project.

It’s rotten wood replacement season! This house was just painted and the painter found this rot on the deck post and rails. I was able to chip out the rot in the post and fill it with an epoxy wood filler and replaced the rail with cedar. These kind of jobs are the majority of what I do as we proceed into the rainy season.

Today’s job was replacing rotten skirting on a beautiful home. There was a lot of rot at the corners especially where the downspouts are. This is pretty typical in the Pacific Northwest but it’s important to make sure you replace any rot you see so you don’t get bigger water issues behind it. Tomorrow I replace some trim for the same customer and a door jamb.

This shed was barely hanging on when I arrived. The floor was completely rotted, water damage on both eaves, and framing that wasn’t fastened. After re-siding one side, moving the door, adding in new doors and trim, replacing the eave sheathing and roofing, and replacing the OSB subfloor with 3/4” plywood, this is a much more complete shed. Thanks to Curt Abram for the cedar boards as always. The customer is going to leave the cedar board trim as is.

One of my favorite things is deck re-stain because when an old worn out cedar deck gets a nice fresh coat of it looks so good. This one was stained with Armstrong-Clark Redwood semi-transparent stain and I feel like it really went well with the house color.

It’s been a warm week here but I built this 7 1/2 foot tall deer fence for a customer. I used the 1/2” black coated hardware cloth and it almost looks like there’s no fencing at all. This is the tallest fence I’ve built to-date.

Here in the Pacific Northwest we deal with a lot of rain. Every fence post I’ve ever replaced has the same exact problem. Right where the post meets the concrete it snaps in half from rot. This post took me nearly 3 hours to get out of the hole. The post was rotten all the way through to the bottom and there was nothing left but the concrete. When people ask why it’s so expensive to replace posts here it’s because getting 100+ pounds of concrete at least 2 feet in the ground is backbreaking work even with the best tools. I was able to replace two of these for a customer and get their fence all put back together again. If your posts feel like they are starting to wiggle get them replaced sooner than later. Not only will your carpenter/handyman thank you but it’s a lot easier to jack them out of the ground when there’s still some life left to the post.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on a big porch enclosure and lean-to project. I did both a back porch and a front porch with a covered ramp. Installed metal roofing on both and framed both porches to keep them warmer in the colder months. I’ll be going back to do the trim but for now the majority of it is finished.
