GLASS ANOMALY

We found this gem during an inspection of a 50 story building built in 1974 and reglazed in 1986.

The halo manifests when the IGU no longer can keep out moisture. The can occur in Low-E / Metallic Coating Breakdown or Internal Glass Corrosion.

Although we were not privy to do any forensics, this type of anomaly is most likely caused by coating breakdown combined with moisture corrosion.

FALL INVESTIGATION

Our firm gets involved in Fall cases regarding Power Platform Staging and Rope Decent. This one was one of the most difficult ones emotionally to investigate, but I feel it is critical to share as it is an outcome that nobody would ever want, even the one that was involved.

A 50+ father and Window Cleaner was doing routine window cleaning on a Sunday with his fellow Window Cleaners. From what I saw on-site, his rope had a carabiner and they would go from Roof Anchor to Roof Anchor making descents. No safety rope was used. The last attempt, the Window Cleaner set his rope, but did not secure it to the Roof Anchor by accident. The rest is tragic history.

Safety redundancy is critical, especially in working on building facades as we do. Never become comfortable, relaxed or rushed. Methodically check everything before using equipment. Peer review each other's safety equipment. The more eyes the better off.

CONTINUOUS STABILIZATION

If Ground Rigging a Powered Platform Stage on tall buildings, it is very important to have Continuous Stabilization.

The existing Curtainwall on the 60-Story building we were going to survey, SGC designed Continuous Stabilization that tied into a modular platform system. The nylon "Mullion Grabbers" were spring loaded and could be clammed on the existing Track Mullion of the Curtainwall.

The components were fabricated by R&R Scaffolding out of New Jersey.
