Before drilling the first borehole, a geothermal project starts with a series of decisions:

Available land. Existing HVAC systems. Geological conditions. Construction phasing. Long-term operational goals.

As organizations look for ways to reduce energy consumption, lower emissions and improve long-term facility performance, geothermal is gaining attention across industrial, commercial and institutional projects.

Adapted from the Fall 2025 issue of Beneath the Hard Hat®, the latest blog post explores how geothermal systems work, why Wisconsin is well-positioned for geothermal construction and the factors owners evaluate when considering a project.

Before the final beam goes up, the crew signs it.

The tradition recognizes the people behind the work and celebrates a significant milestone on the path to completion.

At MilliporeSigma, team members gathered to sign and place the final structural beam before it was lifted into position. The moment reflects the coordination, planning and craftsmanship required to execute complex industrial projects.

"These guys are the best at what they do. From the selection of foremen to the foresight in phasing the project, they are spot on every time." — Sean Brandon, Principal Construction Manager, MilliporeSigma

Farnsworth and Urban Middle Schools have served Sheboygan students for nearly 100 years. Groundbreaking ceremonies held earlier this month mark the start of the next chapter.

Last week, the Sheboygan Area School District broke ground on a $121 million, voter-approved investment in both schools, launching a multi-year effort focused on modern learning environments, improved accessibility and spaces designed to serve future generations of students and families.

Quasius | Smith, a joint venture between Quasius Construction and C.D. Smith Construction, is partnering with Sheboygan Area School District and Bray Architects as construction gets underway.

Congratulations to Sheboygan Area School District, the entire project team and the Sheboygan community.

75 percent was the target. 92 percent was the result. At UW-Stevens Point, sustainability and construction planning started with the same goal.

The difference was integrating sustainability into the process from the beginning as a construction objective.

The Gale and Paul Kirby Library and Student Resource Center replaces the former Albertson Hall with a four-story, 150,000 SF facility built around that approach. Green roofs, 350 roof-mounted solar panels, water conservation measures, dark sky compliance standards, bird collision deterrence strategies and native vegetation restoration were part of the plan from the earliest stages of design and construction.

Concrete, masonry and carpentry were self-performed throughout, maintaining direct control over material sourcing, waste reduction and schedule to support the project's sustainability goals.

Replacing a campus landmark that served students for more than 50 years is one thing. Doing it without disrupting an active university is another.

The former Albertson Hall site at UW-Stevens Point is now home to the Gale and Paul Kirby Library and Student Resource Center, a new four-story facility that brings together library resources, academic archives, student IT, career services and financial aid under one roof.
