Building Science Mistake to Avoid: Installing underslab insulation without a thermal break at the foundation wall

"Underslab insulation is an excellent energy-efficiency improvement, since the earth below the slab is typically much cooler than we prefer to keep our homes. Unfortunately, the efficacy of this fairly simple and inexpensive detail can be largely undone if the slab is poured in direct contact with the footing or foundation wall.

Only by providing a thermal break at the slab edge will an insulated slab perform as intended. Without it, the first 4 ft. to 6 ft. of the slab near the foundation wall will remain much colder than the rest of the floor as heat is lost to the cool earth on the other side of the foundation. This will rob the home of its intended comfort and efficiency." —Travis Brungardt, Catalyst Construction, Prairie Village, Kan.

Bill Beach – owner and general manager of Fish Creek Construction – has loved working with his hands and building things for as long as he can remember. He was raised on the Colorado plains – Simla to be exact. Growing up his dad was a civil engineer and in addition to that owned a custom home building business.

Bill’s uncle owned a concrete business and another uncle was an excavating contractor. “When I wasn’t working with my dad, I was with my uncles. I was hooked on the business from a young age. It’s just instantly gratifying to see your hard work turn into something,” said Bill.

Fish Creek Construction specializes in residential construction services from remodels to luxury home builds. On average, they complete three to four major projects a year and a handful of smaller jobs as well. Bill is involved in every step of the project and he’s committed to building with integrity from concept to creation.

Meet our new Office Manager! Jessica Strong lives in Fort Collins with her fiancé and 4 children. Jessica has been in real estate for many years in different capacities. She has sold homes for a Semi-Custom Builder in Texas and started working at a real estate office early in life. She is highly organized and thrilled to be apart of the Fish Creek Construction team. Jessica enjoys hiking, lifting weights, kickboxing, climbing and being competitive in any way in her free time.
