Researchers at the Powerhouse Energy Campus are on the cutting edge of air quality research, developing wildfire smoke forecasting with funding from the NSF ASCEND Engine in Colorado and Wyoming.

As Professor John Volckens puts it: “Right now, the best indicator that you're going to have a wildfire smoke day is whether yesterday was a wildfire smoke day.”

However, wildfire smoke causes economic damage through:

- Negative health impacts
- Increased hospital admissions
- Canceled events
- and more

New forecasting enables more accurate decision-making, limiting negative impacts.

Northglenn High School took a trip to the Powerhouse as part of their Camp Ignition program!

While at the Powerhouse, students took a tour of the facility, and did our PlayDoh circuit lab. This lab teaches students how the electric grid works, and how circuits are made.

Thank you for coming Northglenn HS STEM!

We're welcoming a new group of students to the Powerhouse!

Before diving into hands-on learning, they attend our Safety Orientation Presentation to learn the protocols that help keep our community safe. From emergency exit locations to shop and lab safety procedures, students gain the knowledge they need to work confidently and responsibly in the building.

Innovation starts with a commitment to safety—and that's where every Powerhouse journey begins.

Dr. Todd Bandhauer's work was recently featured in a State magazine article!

As co-founder of AtmosZero, Bandhauer developed the company's Boiler 2.0 technology. This breakthrough will help decarbonize the steam and boiling processes used in brewing and other industrial applications.

What makes this story especially exciting is that the technology was developed right out of the Powerhouse. It's exactly the kind of innovation the Energy Institute was designed to support: taking research from science to solutions to scale. By helping innovators test, refine, and commercialize new technologies, the Energy Institute is accelerating the transition to a cleaner energy future.

Blake Teipel, a CSU engineering alum who is a 3 time founder offers entrepreneurship office hours with the Energy Institute's Incubator Hub! During these hours Teipel provides guidance from how to scale up a business to fundraising strategies.

These office hours are free, and available to anyone in the community. Current CSU students can also access dedicated space at the Powerhouse to work on senior design projects or start a business.

If you are interested in learning more about how to participate in these office hours, check out our SOURCE story here: https://source.colostate.edu/energy-institutes-incubator-hub-spurs-entrepreneurship/

Congratulations to the team from STEM Launch and Northglenn HS STEM
who represented Adams 12 Five Star Schools at the 2026 World KidWind Challenge in Madison, Wisconsin!

Students from STEM Launch’s fourth and eighth grades joined eleventh grade students from Northglenn High School to compete.

KidWind Project challenges students to design and build small-scale wind turbines while presenting their engineering process to judges and seeing how many Joules of energy can be generated by putting their turbine into a wind tunnel.
