Dwight Eisenhower once famously said, “Never kick a fresh turd on a hot day.” While it’s a quote that gets a laugh, our IT/Security Assistant Manager, Jon Janssen, used it to teach Fort Dodge students a profound lesson last week: when the heat is already on, a true leader’s job is to stop creating new problems and start finding solutions. Transitioning from the high-stakes world of the prison system to corporate leadership at CJ Bio America, he shared that real influence isn't about power—it’s about the MICEE framework: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, engage, and encourage.
Leadership is a skill set, not a personality trait, and it requires a relentless focus on the people behind the tasks. As he told the students, “Inspiring your shared vision is basically buy-in—it’s about educating people as to the why.” He spoke about the profound impact a leader has on team culture, explaining that professionals don't just choose a company—they choose the people they work for. He emphasized that even in the face of challenging tasks or high-pressure seasons, a strong, empathetic leader is what transforms a group of individuals into a resilient team that stands by one another through thick and thin.
At CJ Bio, we are incredibly proud to have a leader of his caliber on our team. With over a decade of front-line experience and a deep commitment to service, he is a decorated example of the excellence we strive for, and we are honored to have him representing us as a mentor for the next generation of our community.
We were struck by how focused and hungry for knowledge these students were throughout the session. There is a palpable sense of ambition in this class, and seeing them soak up real-world leadership lessons gives us immense confidence in the future of our local workforce. They are walking away with the tools to be not just productive employees, but the kind of citizens who will lead our community forward for years to come.
