Oysters could be key to saving Biscayne Bay. I know some folks are also testing all over Broward to see where oyster restoration is a viable option.

Seafood lovers may find oysters a delicacy, but did you know they also play a vital role in protecting our coastlines from hurricane storm surge and clean pollution from our waterways?

Our Manatee friends are starving!

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Manatees have starved to death by the hundreds along Florida’s east coast because algae blooms and contaminants are killing the seagrass the beloved sea mammals eat, a wildlife official told a House committee Tuesday.

Today, I asked TaxWatch to prepare a report analyzing whether local politicians across Florida are skimming funds from water and sewage utilities and diverting it to pork barrel projects. Funds generated from these utility services should be used to maintain and improve the systems — and reduce raw sewage spills into the Indian River Lagoon, for example — not to fund the pet projects of local politicians.

"Friday morning October 8th will see the highest tide following the new moon two days prior to that...The higher water levels can also act as a test to see how systems put in place to combat rising sea levels are working. Pumps and raised roads and sea walls can keep or get the water out, but underground is another problem. Higher water levels make septic systems work less. With sea-level rise, today’s high tide could be tomorrow’s normal."

Biscayne Bay is famous for its luscious meadows of seagrass blanketing the bottom of the bay. It is one of the only places on the planet inhabited by all seven species of seagrass.
But scientists suspect that ongoing pollution problems coupled with heavy flushing from stormwater, coastal canals and rivers may have caused fish kills.

We must take steps to protect our Manatees. That's why ROARs first initiative is going to involve helping to feed our manatee friends. Share, like and tell your friends to sign up to get notified when we start accepting volunteers for this effort.

During 2021 an unprecedented 937 manatees have died in Florida, more than double the five-year annual average only nine months into the year. The staggering loss represents 10 percent of the animal’s population in the state, estimated at 8,810.
