UESI was awarded a project from the City of Palm Bay to remove and install new channel markers in the Turkey Creek. UESI successfully accomplished the project with a four-man crew led by Construction Supervisor Lee Busbin and a skillful crew of Anthony Cantillo, Chandler Price, and Max Jackson. The scope of work included the removal of nineteen existing channel markers and to furnish and install twenty-two new channel markers and piles. Using an a-frame vessel, UESI jetted the piles into position with a three-inch high-pressure pump and running a one-inch jet twenty feet in length. The piles were installed in various depths. The project staging area was provided by City and a local Palm Bay resident and owner of a nearby marina. UESI was able to work with and provide favorable support to the local resident due to his space and time. This project was successfully completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

In celebration of the project, the City of Palm Bay Public Works Department hosted a Groundbreaking Event at Goode Park located along the beautiful Turkey Creek. Attending the celebration included members of the Florida Inland Navigation District (F.I.N.D), members of City staff, the City Mayor, City Council, and Florida Senator Debbie Mayfield. F.I.N.D is an organization created by Florida Legislature in 1927 to be a state sponsor of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Florida. F.I.N.D two key roles are to function as the local sponsor for the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and provide assistance to other governments to develop waterway access and help fund improvement projects. Seventy-five percent of the Turkey Creek project was funded by F.I.N.D. The UESI staff was personally thanked by Mayor Rob Medina, along with the City staff, Florida Senator Debbie Mayfield, and the F.I.N.D. representatives.

We completed another successful project!

UESI was contracted by Jonathan’s Landing Property Owners Association to remove a failing rip rap bag headwall and flap gate on a 36” lake equalization drainage pipe. First, the crew had to demolish the existing headwall and flap gate, then grade and compact the soils in preparation for the new C.I.P concrete headwall. The crew then built the form work, installed reinforcing steel, and poured the new concrete headwall. After some concrete curing time, the crews removed the form work and installed the new HDPE flap gate, backfilled, graded and restored the site. From start to finish this project progressed without any issues and the client was very impressed with the crew, the progress and the finished product.

UESI Celebrates Men's Health Month!

UESI is taking time to focus on men's health and preventative care. Men often skip healthcare visits. A Cleveland Clinic study showed that 40% of men only go to the doctor if they are experiencing a serious health problem. Skipping physicals and checkups could mean the difference between catching an early issue or it being too late. Whatever your age, UESI is urging men to visit their healthcare provider in order to keep a strong and healthy body, both mentally and physically.

UESI crews assisted with the completion of a successful Intrusion Detection System!

From April 2021 to June 2022, divers from UESI assisted in building the foundation for the new Security Anti-Intrusion Fence. This was a unique project to the UESI skillset in being that the water temperatures ranged between 95-112 degrees. The location of the jobsite was approximately 200 feet from the discharge of a power plant, resulting in 2.5 knot currents with 0 feet of visibility.

The crew was challenged with various tasks including in-depth surveying of bottom contour, using pneumatic tools to shape bottom to desired grade, precision burning of 14-inch “H” piles in preparation of setting an 80-ton concrete foundation slab. After the slab was placed and an extensive shimming process was complete, concrete was pumped through the slab to lock it into place on bottom. After the bottom slab was in position, we placed a 50-ton, prefabricated slope piece on either end of the canal. The slope pieces were locked in by use of turnbuckles, come-alongs, and a series of studs and hardware. Once the slope was in place, sheet pile were driven and sealed using rip-rap bags and hydraulic cement. Then concrete was pumped in two-separate 11-foot lifts. The final step of the project was to place two 30-ton abutment pieces on either side of canal. The UESI crew did an exemplary job of forming up very irregular surfaces in place in a very limited amount of time to prepare for the final lifts of concrete. Upon completing the two final lifts with zero leaks or blowouts from the field fit forms, the UESI crew, upon direction from the client, stripped all forms, removed all downlines and ladders from underwater, demobilized the worksite, and travelled home.

When the second phase of this project began, the UESI crew re-mobilized and performed approximately 3 hours of diving in 110 degrees to set template on all sets of bolts and check to make sure all hardware fit on every stud by hand.

In short, every crew member that was a part of this job endured conditions that the U.S. Navy, USCG, and ADC does not deal with very often. I am truly proud of the personnel that dove every day and dealt with the lasting side effects (night sweats, digestion issues, leg cramps, and restless leg syndrome) of hot water diving. Not to mention the dangers of high current and zero visibility. The actual aspects of heavy underwater construction for this project might have tested more seasoned divers in more favorable conditions. We truly have a talented group of young divers at our company that I am more than willing to take on any of my jobs. In my opinion, we should continue to invest whatever we can into their growth and experience.

UESI is completing its work at the Fermi 2 Nuclear Plant is in support of the station refueling outage (RF21)!

UESI has been contracted to work many non-diving RF21 projects (Torus Vent Header, Torus V***r Inspections, RHR Heat Exchanger, and Nuclear Technical Services). The contracted Fermi RF21 Diving Project was for desludging (cleaning), inspections, and repair of degraded coating conditions. The torus diving project expanded in scope upon discovery conditions found by UESI diving inspectors. This expanded scope was unplanned and jeopardized the Fermi 2 outage schedule. As a result of the work scope change, UESI had to maintain, and add to, its initial diving team crew size and needed to manage/develop work plans to maximize work efficiency. As a result, UESI changed the conventional day shift, night shift work schedule to develop an extended one-shift operation to rotate diving work crews “on station” to maximize work continuity. UESI needed to convince Fermi 2 station management that this innovative approach would provide improved work efficiency and best project success & completion time. UESI brought new divers to the site, many new to nuclear. This placed additional responsibility on UESI supervisors and experienced personnel to train, oversee, mentor and ensure new personnel adopted UESI safety & work methods.

The Fermi UESI dive team, and project management stepped up to the task and worked diligently on an arduous work effort in a safe, productive and quality manner. UESI was able to complete this work ahead of plant forecasts without injury or work implementation incident.

Mr. Pete Dietrich (DTE Fermi Chief Nuclear Officer) and Mr. Chad Rowe (DTE Fermi Senior Project Manager) visited the UESI Fermi office trailer to extend their appreciation for a successful and very challenging Fermi Torus diving and coating repair work project.

Mr. Dietrich emphasized to all that despite the great hard work and commitment to safety, he asked the UESI team to finish strong with safety and high quality held paramount! He asked and got the UESI team to repeat this message. In addition, Mr. Dietrich gave the UESI crew a Fermi Challenge Coin for significant achievement that has a photo of the power plant on one side, and a raised image of Enrico Fermi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_Fermi) on the other side. Etched on the edge of the coin is one of Mr. Dietrich’s favorite quotes, “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

We were very appreciative of Mr. Dietrich to come out to our site office trailer to provide his personal recognition to the UESI team. It was a good moment for the team and for the company!

On Monday, March 7th, UESI was privileged to work with an AMAZING group of our nations military men at the local Navy Seal Museum. Our task was to strategically move two armories from one location on their property to another. Each armory weighed in at approximately 40,000lbs. The pictures and videos in this post show the step-by-step process.

Hats off to a smooth, successful re-positioning of the armories!
