Fort Scott, Kansas, is home to Mid-Continental Restoration—and its historic downtown is home to a remarkable collection of 19th-century Victorian architecture.

Mid-Continental Restoration recently completed masonry restoration work on several historic buildings throughout downtown, including brick and masonry cleaning, tuckpointing, selective brick repair and replacement, and the application of specialized protective coatings.

Working within this historic district, our team focused on preserving each building's original character while addressing the deterioration that comes with age and exposure to the elements. Read the full project recap below.

Buildings constructed in the post-1970 era rarely rely solely on the exterior cladding for protection from air and water pe*******on. In these cases, the brick, stone, metal, etc. are primarily decorative cladding that protects more effective waterproofing systems in the wall cavity behind.

Far too often an important part of the waterproofing system, namely the thru-wall flashing, is either defective, overlooked entirely, or not designed and installed properly. The sole purpose of thru-wall flashing is to divert moisture back to the exterior of the building. When this fails moisture ends up inside the building. An annual inspection of the exterior envelope is a good practice that can identify issues before these can morph into larger, more costly repairs later. An exterior building inspection is not a difficult task, and can usually be completed with the naked eye, or a pair of binoculars. On high-rise structures, a drone inspection can be cost-effective and provide visibility at the upper elevations.

🏛️ Project Spotlight: Washington County Courthouse | Brenham, Texas

What began as a traditional historic masonry restoration project quickly evolved into something much more complex.

Mid-Continental Restoration Company (MCR) was originally contracted to restore the courthouse's beautiful limestone facade, including:

• Limestone repair- Dutchmen, patching, and crack injection
• Complete repointing of the stone masonry
• Lintel investigation and flashing replacement

However, during our initial exploratory work at the lintels, our crews uncovered an unexpected condition—many of the lintels were severely corroded and/or deteriorated and would require complete replacement. Due to the stack bond coursing, and lack of support from every other stone, we would be required to completely remove all the stone cladding, replace the steel angles and install new through wall flashing. Stones are being carefully cataloged and reset in original locations as closely as possible.

That discovery fundamentally changed the scope of the project.

To properly restore and preserve this historic landmark, our team is now carefully removing the entire limestone cladding system from the courthouse. Every stone is being:�
✔️ Removed with extreme care�
✔️ Cataloged and documented�
✔️ Safely stored for reuse�
✔️ Prepared for reinstallation once the new structural support system is complete

Historic restoration is rarely as simple as replacing what you can see. Many of the biggest challenges are hidden beneath the surface, requiring experienced craftsmen, careful planning, and the flexibility to adapt when decades-old construction reveals unexpected conditions.

We're proud to be entrusted with preserving one of Brenham's most recognizable landmarks and look forward to returning this courthouse to service while maintaining its historic character for generations to come.
