It's that time of year again. Time for the $20 part that kills a $5,000 compressor. If your air conditioner suddenly stops blowing cold air in the middle of an afternoon heatwave, there is a very good chance this little silver cylinder is the culprit.

These are a run capacitors. Think of it like the battery or spark plug for your system’s hardest-working parts. It gives the compressor and fan motor the electrical jolt they need to kick on and stay running. During a scorching Texas summer, these capacitors operate under immensei heat and high pressure, and over time, they start to bulge, leak, or burn out completely.

When a capacitor fails, your system can’t start. Worse yet, if it slowly loses power without dying completely, your compressor will try to start anyway, drawing massive electrical amps, overheating, and potentially frying the entire engine of your AC system. Swapping a weak capacitor during routine service is a quick, inexpensive fix—ignoring it can destroy your whole unit.

Mark's Pro Tip: If you go outside and notice your AC unit is making a loud, low humming or buzzing sound, but the fan blades on top aren't spinning, turn the system OFF immediately at your thermostat. That hum means your motor is receiving power and trying to turn, but a dead capacitor isn't giving it the spark to get moving. If you leave it humming like that, the motor will overheat and burn out in short order. Shut it down, give us a call, and let us swap the capacitor before a minor part turns into a major repair.

When you are looking at home maintenance, don't forget the outdoor disconnect box sitting right next to your AC unit. Over time, mud daubers, wasps, and spiders love to build nests inside those small, warm metal boxes. If enough debris or bugs build up around the copper fuses or pull-out block, it can cause electrical arcing, trip your main breaker, or shut down your system entirely. Give the outside of that box a gentle tap with a broom handle before opening it, and keep the immediate area around your unit clear of brush and pests.

Built to Last

We hear it all the time from folks around town: "My air conditioner is getting up there in age. Do you guys even work on systems that old, or are you just going to tell me I have to replace it?"

Take a look at this unit right here. This is a classic, heavy-duty workhorse that we estimate is pushing 40 - 50 years old. Mark has been personally servicing this exact system for years, keeping it running smoothly without a replacement.

Mark has always run this company with a strict "repair first, replace only if absolutely necessary" mentality. A lot of companies will look at a unit with this much history and immediately try to sell you a brand-new system. We don't operate that way. Mark has spent a lifetime developing the kind of old-school troubleshooting skills that let him spot creative fixes and minor issues that other people completely overlook.

While modern units are definitely more efficient, the truth is that with the right care, routine maintenance, and an experienced technician who actually knows how to diagnose a problem rather than just swap parts, these old-school systems can last for eons. If a unit can be saved and kept running safely, we are going to save it.

Mark's Westside Pro Tip - If you live in an established neighborhood with older electrical lines, your unit is highly susceptible to summer voltage drops. A failing or weak capacitor on a 30 or 40-year-old system will struggle to kick the motor on when the grid dips, causing it to hum loudly and overheat. If you hear your outside unit making a loud, continuous buzzing sound without the fan spinning, shut it down immediately at the thermostat and give us a call before the motor itself gets ruined.
