June's Gage of the Month is the Recess Pe*******on Gage!

Can you use a driver bit or a caliper to check recess pe*******on?

Not if you want accurate results.

Driver bits are not precision gages and can vary significantly from one manufacturer to another. Calipers may measure total cavity depth, but they do not measure actual driver engagement.

If you're checking recess pe*******on, use the proper gage for the job.

June's Gage of the Month is the Recess Pe*******on Gage!

What sets a six-lobe recess apart from many other recess styles?

Most recesses only require a GO pe*******on gage, but a six-lobe recess requires both a GO gage and a NO GO (fallaway) gage.

The GO gage is responsible for checking the full pe*******on depth of the minimum material condition, while the NO GO gage helps ensure the chamfer is not overly deep.

Together, these measurements help verify proper engagement length so the fastener does not strip out, cam out, or break the head off during assembly.

May’s Gage of the Month is the Thread Plug Gage!

What’s the difference between a work plug and a setting plug?

Work plugs are used to inspect internal product threads. Setting plugs are used to set or calibrate thread ring gages.

They may look similar, but using the wrong one can lead to incorrect setup and unreliable inspection results.

Understanding the purpose of each is an important part of proper thread gaging practice.

May’s Gage of the Month is the Thread Plug Gage!

What’s the difference between reversible and taperlock thread plug gages?

Taperlock gages mount into the handle using a tapered shank and are designed for one-direction use.

Reversible gages can be flipped as the lead threads wear, which can help extend usable gage life and reduce replacement frequency.

Two different designs, each built around how the gage is expected to wear during inspection.

May’s Gage of the Month is the Thread Plug Gage!

Did you know the GO and NO GO members are intentionally different lengths?

The GO member is longer because it has to verify the full usable thread length. The NO GO only checks the lead threads, so it’s shorter by design.

Another detail many people miss: chip grooves are only found on the GO member, and smaller sizes may not have them at all.

Small design details, but all tied directly to how the gage functions during inspection.

May’s Gage of the Month is the Thread Plug Gage!

Before you inspect a single part, what should you verify first?

Your thread plug gage should be calibrated, match the correct thread size, and match the correct class of fit.

A gage can look correct and still produce inaccurate inspection results if the pitch diameter or class does not match the specification.

Good inspection starts before the gage ever touches the part.
