Happy International Geothermal Month! This week we are focusing on the benefits that geothermal heating & cooling has when applied to Data Centers.
According to a Pew Research Center report on U.S. data centers, typical AI-focused data centers consume as much electricity as 100,000 households annually! By 2030, the figure is expected to grow by 133% to 426 TWh.
Ground source (geothermal) heating and cooling technology can ...
• Significantly reduce peak demand;
• Transfer rejected heat from the data center to neighboring facilities that need heat (e.g. homes, schools, industrial applications, etc.) via district energy (thermal energy network) systems;
• Reject heat to surface water (pond or lake) heat exchangers that may be required by local ordinances for stormwater runoff, providing an inexpensive, very efficient heat sink. The CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25 Design and Installation Standard includes surface water heat exchanger design and installation requirements.
