Hey everyone! I had to step back from operations here at Precious Plastic Boston for a little bit to readjust my focus but I am back and ready to go! As you can see I am doing some rebranding and am in the process of expanding our operations to one day become a sustainability leader in New England!

To be honest, I almost called it quits with this Precious Plastic project not too long ago. I had gotten so consumed with the realization that I'd finally found a way to use my skills and do something that society can seriously benefit from, that I started working at a really unsustainable rate and burned out. Take it from me, tech startups are no joke. I learned the hard way that it's one thing to play around and build a cool machine or two but building an organization that can serve as one of New England's champions in sustainability is a completely different type of process altogether.

To have a chance at building a sustainable future we need an organization that provides a platform for makers, artists, engineers, architects, and innovators from various backgrounds to focus their skills & knowledge on developing solutions specifically for the plastic waste crisis. Precious Plastic New England aims to become that type of organization and in doing so will become the region's leader in plastic recycling.

We can achieve this by becoming the world's first plastic recycling facility with its own research institute and community center. A lofty but necessary goal. In order for us to be effective in doing what we do, we need to focus on Sustainable Manufacturing, Education, Research, and Community and, with the proper infrastructure, this could be the kind of organization that will be a beacon of hope for the Commonwealth and our neighbors.

I am not saying this will be accomplished tomorrow or next year. This is simply a vision of the future. A target we can all aim for and achieve together. I know this is achievable and things are already falling into place but we have a lot of work to do. This move to The Worcshop is going to help facilitate that vision and there are so many opportunities to do some seriously cool stuff coming up on the horizon.

Been MIA from social for a little while and keeping my head down to get stuff done but wanted to give everyone an update on what we’ve been working on and what’s to come!

•I realized I haven’t really shown my face much on here or have even really addressed where I envision PPB’s future so I’ll be releasing some video content and a sort of vision statement/manifesto soon

•I’ve also been working on acquiring funding to upgrade our workshop which will enable us to really start putting some programs and projects, which I will go into further detail in out manifesto.

•”If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, bring a team.” -someone

When I first started this journey, I didn’t have many options for business partners and I think of myself as being pretty self-reliant so I started by myself. However, now that things are taking off and I’m looking to scale our operations, I’ll definitely need a team. I’ll be putting out a call to action for makers, builders, social media and marketing experts, etc. to join the battle! I’ll go into more detail in upcoming posts to stay tuned!

•Lastly, our sheetpress build is really coming along! It’s starting to look pretty awesome but we still have a bit of work to do. Profess shots coming up!

I’m 1869, while searching for a sustainable substitute for ivory used in billiard balls, John Wesley Hyatt invented Celluloid, the first synthetic plastic.

He experimented with many materials but found it difficult to find the right mixture that could produce the perfect billiard ball. At one point, however, he found that mixing wood pulp & shellac enabled him to make dominoes & checkers.

So he took it a step further and found a really practical plastic solution by experimenting with nitrocellulose (a flammable nitrate of common wood or cotton cellulose), camphor (a waxy resin obtained from Asian camphor trees), and alcohol and then pressing the mixture in a heated mold.

So with the help of his brother, Isaiah, he formed the Celluloid Manufacturing Company and first started produced denture plates and sheets.

The rest is history. He would later go on to develop more than 200 patents in his lifetime in water filtration systems, roller bearings, and so much more.
