👨🏻‍🔧 It is always a good idea to visually inspect your home’s mechanical equipment for general wear and tear.

On outdoor heating and cooling equipment - wires get nicked by w**d eaters, air conditioner whips can become brittle, wires can be come exposed, and the list goes on.

There’s no alarming hazard with the wiring on this almost 40 year old Trane unit but it never hurts to stay aware of things that can become problematic over time on any mechanical system in your home!

When this customer goes to upgrade their unit they’ll be getting a new electrical whip and we’d like to see the outer jacket of that thermostat wire extend into the control box of the unit to give it some added protection.

If something doesn’t look quite right on your mechanical equipment, bring it to the attention of your service technician on their next visit so they can answer any questions you might have.

Stay home aware, folks and we’ll be here if you need us!

👨‍🔧 TECH TIP: How to Clean Your Outdoor "Spine Fin" Coil

We've seen a lot of dirty outdoor coils in our years servicing HVAC equipment so we wanted to show you how to clean a Spine Fin coil. These coils are typically used in Trane outdoor units.

You'll Need:
- Water Hose
- Decent Water Pressure
- A Nozzle
- Optional: Towel (You're about to get drenched.)

Start from the bottom of the coil and angel your nozzle such that you can see the water come up and out of the cabinet slots above where you are working. Work the water slowly back and forth methodically up the coil until you reach the top. Do this for the entire perimeter of the coil. Even the back!

Cleaning your outdoor coil, if dirty, can dramatically increase the performance of the unit. The purpose of the outdoor coil in the summer time is to release heat absorbed from your home and it can not effectively do that when it's wearing a sweater of cobwebs, grass, dust and other debris.

Once again, this is how to clean a Spin Fin coil. Stay tuned for more videos on how to clean other types of outdoor coils!

👨🏻‍🔧 TECH TIP: FROZEN LINES 👨🏻‍🔧 If your outdoor unit refrigeration lines are freezing up, it’s time to turn off your system and call your HVAC professional.

There are several things that can cause a system to freeze up. In cooling mode if the lines are frozen up on the outside of your home your indoor coil is most likely a block of ice.

To ensure your HVAC technician can troubleshoot all components of your HVAC system when he/she arrives we highly recommend leaving your system off so that it can thaw out. You can do this by turning the system mode to “off” and, if you have a fan setting, turning the fan to “on.”

Please be aware that when an indoor coil is thawing it could produce an excessive amount of water. During the thawing process, keep an eye on the area where your indoor coil is located so you are aware for any water overflow in the attic, mechanical closet or crawl space.

If your refrigeration lines are freezing up, we’d be happy to help and are just a phone call away.

👨🏻‍🔧 TECH TIP: Metal Vent Piping 👨🏻‍🔧
If your metal furnace vent begins to look like rusted swiss cheese... BEWARE!

Take time to inspect your vent piping system regularly. Should rust begin to show itself on the outside of your flue pipe we can guarantee the inside of that pipe is much more damaged than you realize. If neglected, your vent pipe can leak and pour carbon monoxide into your home. PLEASE call a professional if you start to see signs of holes in your vent piping.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can be deadly therefore Phillips & Sons highly recommends the use of carbon monoxide detectors in any homes that utilize any gas appliances!

This customer's vent piping had rusted completely in two and we are so thankful they called us to keep them safe!
