It's been hot in New England lately and while students are looking toward their summer break, school/university facility managers are making their summer to do lists. If your science labs aren't at the top of your list, they should be.

Chemicals that sat unused this year become harder (and more expensive) to deal with the longer they sit. A quick end-of-year walkthrough goes a long way:

🔍 Can you identify everything on the shelf?
📅 Are any chemicals past their shelf life?
🏷️ Are all containers properly labeled?

If you find any mysterious or expired chemicals, get them packed and disposed of asap. We're glad to answer any questions in the comments!

After a New England winter 🌨️, sand, salt, and grit pile up in facility drainage faster than most facility managers realize. Catching these early protects the environment, keeps you compliant, and saves you money. Has your oil/water separator been cleaned since the snow melted?
Here are 4 things that commonly trip up OWS inspections this time of year 🌱.

✨ Pro Tip for Facility Managers ✨

You can alleviate the stress of on-site hazardous waste storage and shipments by creating a system for regular walkthroughs. Here's how to do it:

Start by identifying 🔍 mystery containers early—catch faded labels while the person who used them is onsite. Segregate materials by compatibility during each walkthrough to save yourself time later. Finally, maximize drum 🛢️ space by using your Satellite Accumulation Areas to your advantage. This way, you can wait until a container is actually full before moving it to central storage.

We see it all the time when we get called in for a lab pack: shelves of poorly labeled, disused material. Sorting, labeling, and drumming these sites takes extra time, which can stretch a facility’s budget. Putting a system in place early makes the job cheaper and easier for everyone while keeping your facility compliant 🌟 .

🚨 Emergency Response Highlight! 🚨

Last month, our team responded to a hydraulic oil spill at a local auto dealership with 1,200 gallons of oil-impacted water to clean up. They were on site within the hour and by the end of the day the catch basin was pumped, impacted material was containerized, and (of course) everything was properly labeled and manifested. ✅

It took 3 days to completely close out the project — including pressure washing the catch basin and a complete tanker cleaning.

When an emergency response call comes in, we never know if it's going to take an evening or multiple days to complete. Our field technicians are pros at adapting on the fly. ✨

Catch a glimpse of our team in action as they perform a lacquer tank and line cleaning 🧪✨ ensuring this client's system is 100% clear before the next batch begins.

We’re sharing this raw field view to show a little bit of what industrial maintenance looks like behind the scenes—especially in areas cameras usually can't go. We filmed from an adjacent room to maintain strict safety distances (hence the video quality). Even without a flammable atmosphere present, following standard protocol is always our priority.

It’s not just about cleaning a tank; it’s about protecting the integrity of your product and the safety of your team, our team, and the facility.

Quick question for our municipal and DPW colleagues: As you’re mapping out your facility projects for the spring, which of these is at the top of your "to-do" list right now?

Is it:
A) Managing aging fuel infrastructure and planning for tank replacements. 🛠️
B) Staying on top of routine oil/water separator maintenance and compliance. 🛢️
C) Reviewing 24/7 emergency response protocols to ensure coverage is ready. 🚨

Every municipality has a different set of priorities as the weather turns, so we’re curious to see where the focus is shifting for your team this season.

This hardware store clean-out is a perfect example of why you shouldn't wait to manage unused chemicals or hazardous waste. When the inventory and shelving moved out, these "leftovers" stayed behind—paints, fertilizers, cleaning supplies, old fluorescent bulbs and more.

If these products had been inventoried and managed over time, it would have saved this client significant time and money.

Soon our team will be on-site turning this chaos into a compliant move-out. We’ll sort, pack, and manifest so the client can finally close the door on this location.

Do your local regulatory agencies mandate a professional cleaning schedule for your Oil Water Separator (OWS)? For many facilities, it's part of being compliant ✅.

It’s easy to see these regulations as just another headache 😵‍💫, but they are actually a roadmap for facility maintenance. An OWS is a passive system—it works quietly until it doesn't. As sludge builds up, oil can’t separate and washes straight into the drain.

The best way to keep your OWS off your mental checklist? Put it on a recurring schedule 🗓️. By setting up a maintenance plan based on your specific usage, you don’t have to wonder if you’re compliant or wait for a backup to realize there’s a problem. GSS can help with timing, cleaning, and records, so you can focus on the rest of your facility. 🧘
