Last week one of our team members was able connect with the New Jersey manufacturing community at the NJMEP MFG Day event.

They enjoyed meeting new people, catching up with industry connections, and talking about the challenges and opportunities manufacturers are facing. Events like this are a great reminder of how much we can learn from one another across the industry.

Thank you to NJMEP for bringing everyone together!

Our team just got back from IMTS, and the manufacturing world is moving fast.

As a custom automation integrator, it's important for us to stay on top of emerging technologies and industry trends so we can continue delivering the best solutions for our customers.

As we walked around the show we noticed a few trends for automation from smart tending solutions to advanced workholding systems. It's clear this space continues to evolve quickly. One of the highlights of the week was the opportunity to connect with customers, partners, suppliers, and other industry professionals. It's always valuable to exchange ideas, learn from others, and strengthen relationships across the manufacturing community.

Spectrum Design looks forward to taking what we learned and the connections that we made to better help our customers.

Robots don't build themselves — people do.

Today, we celebrate the trades and engineering teams that make industrial automation possible.

Happy Labor Day, everyone. We appreciate all that you do!

Fixed Automation or Flexible Automation. Which is better?

Fixed Automation:
• Built for one job, done the same way every time.
• Dedicated tooling, hard stops, high speed.
• Ideal when your volumes are high and your part isn't changing anytime soon.

Flexible Automation:
• Built to handle multiple parts or processes without a full retool.
• More sensors, more programming, more upfront investment.
• Ideal for low volume, high mix parts.

Neither one is "better", it depends on what you're actually running and how often it changes.

The mistake we see most is companies buying speed when what they needed was adaptability, or vice versa.
The right answer starts with understanding your process, not chasing a buzzword.

Ask Your Integrator:
What assumptions are you making about my process?

Every solution is built on assumptions — part variation, cycle time stability, operator behavior, scrap rates, and more.

A strong integrator will clearly explain those assumptions and what happens if they change.

If your integrator welcomes questions like this, you’re probably on the right track.

At Spectrum Design, we don't just build machines.
We help reduce risk, expose blind spots, and design solutions that still perform when reality shows up.

Spectrum Design had the opportunity this week to attend training at FANUC America Corporation’s new training facility in Auburn Hills. We got to be part of the first classes through their brand new FANUC Academy building.

We also got a tour through FANUC's US headquarters, learning more about the history of FANUC and how much they have contributed to the automation world.

Proud to keep building on our relationship with FANUC as an authorized system integrator. Training like this is part of why we can support the projects we take on.

Machine tending often gets talked about like it's just a robot loading a machine. But the real value isn't the loading and unloading, it's what that frees up.

Here's what it actually solves:

Operator downtime – Someone standing at a machine just to load a part and hit cycle start isn't the best use of a skilled person's time.
Consistency – A robot loads the same part the same way every cycle. No variation in clamping pressure, part orientation, or timing.
Unattended runtime – Once it's set up right, a tended machine can run through breaks, shift changes, or lights-out overnight — not just during an operator's shift.

The tricky part isn't usually the robot, it's the end of arm tooling and the interface with the machine. Every part, fixture, and machine combo is a little different, and that's where the real engineering happens.
Done right, machine tending doesn't replace your operator. It moves them to something that actually needs a person.

Ask Your Integrator:
What are we not thinking about?

Out of Scope items can add up quick. Know what you want and work with your integrator to ensure you are on the same page on what is included in the scope and what might not be.

A strong integrator won't try to hide additional costs to hit you with later on in the project.

If your integrator welcomes questions like this, you’re probably on the right track.

At Spectrum Design, we don't just build machines.
We help reduce risk, expose blind spots, and design solutions that still perform when reality shows up.

When looking to automate, don't look to replace people, look to replace tasks.

Look for the 4 D's:
• Dull – Repetitive tasks that nobody looks forward to doing all day.
• Dirty – Jobs involving dust, fumes, grinding debris, weld spatter, or other messy environments.
• Dangerous – Applications that put employees near hot parts, heavy loads, sharp edges, or other safety risks.
• Dear – Tasks that are highly expensive, inefficient, or prone to costly human errors.

When we walk through a facility, these are usually the first things we're looking for. Not because every one of them needs a robot, but because they're often the areas where automation can have the biggest impact.
The best automation projects aren't about replacing people. They're about making the work safer, more consistent, and allowing skilled employees to focus on higher-value tasks.

We're excited to introduce our in-house FANUC CRX training and demo unit!

Having a dedicated system in-house allows us to explore applications, test concepts, train our team, and give customers a hands-on look at collaborative robot technology before making an investment.

Whether you're new to automation or evaluating a specific application, seeing a system operate in person can help answer a lot of questions.
