Meadowlark Optics

Meadowlark Optics We are polarization experts. If there's a need to measure, manipulate or fix polarized light... we can help.

More than forty years ago, Tom Baur, researcher for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, needed a solution that resulted in his manufacturing his own custom Pockels cells. With that flagship product, Meadowlark Optics came to be, establishing a world standard for innovative, ultrahigh-quality polarization optics. In the twenty-first century, Meadowlark products help position customers wor

ldwide to pioneer their own innovations. From advances in liquid crystals to precision waveplate products and more, we are steeped in technological possibility and committed to the current and future success of our customers.

50 years ago today the first product barcode scan was performed in a grocery store using an optical scanner. Today's optical scanning possibilities have far surpassed reading the lines on the back of a chewing gum package. The applications available through scanners, detectors, and sensors have opened scientific optics to a world of advances. Note, for instance, the compact beam scanner noted in recent research out of Montana State University using Meadowlark's wire grid polarizers. Take a look at this advancement and its potential uses: https://buff.ly/3VqYDMn

Did you see the lights? Meadowlark Optics Principal Solutions Engineer Ron Stepanek's partner Sarah Watkins took this shot of the recent aurora here in Colorado. This ionosphere activity is the result of the largest solar magnetic storm in the last 20 years. Meadowlark Optics built the polarization optics used at the DKIST solar telescope in Hawaii used to map solar magnetic fields. These maps are needed to help predict these storms. The storms can wreak havoc on satellites and radio communication and even destroy the electrical transformers used in our electrical grid in more severe storms than this.

Our Founder Tom Baur notes regarding the solar eclipse: "Recently we built an optic called Andre that is being used at DKIST in Hawaii as part of studies of this eclipse... The corona is so faint that it is almost impossible to study except from space or during a total eclipse."
