Educational / Adaptive reuse

Adaptive Reuse of 160-year-old, historic St. Anne Episcopal church in the Brooklyn
Heights area. As part of a Master Plan study, HHPA developed a strategy for
incorporating this acquired former church as a new campus link, for student services
and public spaces and Packer’s student program. This former religious building
preserved all significant architectural features with the addition of a glass-clad
grand atrium, a dining commons, and additional study rooms.

Project designed with Daniel Barrenechea as a senior designer at Hardy Holman Pfeiffer Associates.

Park Avenue Dialysis Center

Inserted in an existing brick building in Upper East Side New York City, Park Avenue Dialysis is ZAD’s first large Dialysis Center design for a public Health Care Organization. The strictly interior design program located within a historic building with lumber structural supports required almost surgical interventions for design systems and equipment. The successful integration of all specialties within a friendly and inviting interior created a successful and warm dialysis clinic environment, nor a typical feature in this type of facility.

Located in burgeoning East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this new dialysis center will enjoy a prominent urban scene and plenty of natural light. While its surrounding street facade is a mainly glazed storefront, the interior design strategy offers a loft-like environment with exposed finished concrete columns and surfaces, in combination with polished millwork stations and a pastel influx of colors for selected floors and surfaces. The new facility will include 24 stations for dialysis treatment and comfortable waiting areas for visiting families.

The narrow width and deep length result in a typical railroad apartment layout, but even in this limited setting, the resulting facade is anything but sterile. Fitted like a little black dress, with shaped balconies providing a lively facade and light-infused interiors.

Located on the more private side of Regeis Care Center, the center is tucked in a secluded area, surrounded by landscaped areas and groves of trees. As a new design intervention, the center is covered in multicolor metal panels, for a playful facade that is easily identified. The colorful treatment continues in its Interior Design, where the floor, counters, and columns reveal a color-coordinated palette of hues and finishes.
