We are excited to announce that NSBP will be co-hosting the Physics Colloquium this Thursday at 3:00pm (Zoom link will also be provided in our bio).

I will highlight my research interests in surface science and nanoscale mechanics here at UF as well as experiences working in the U.S. government as an intelligence analyst, the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, U.S. Air Force Research Lab, and several companies. This Tuesday at 6PM (zoom link in the bio) we are returning to our speaker series with Dr. Winston Roberts!

Dr. Winston Roberts is a theoretical physicist and professor at Florida State University. He has also been a Program Officer in the Physics Division at the NSF, and a Program Manager in the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy.
His past research focused on nuclear theory, where he investigated the properties of hadrons. Utilizing quark models, the heavy quark effective theory, phenomenological lagrangians and a variety of other numerical methods, he delved into the structures and properties of these sub-atomic particles.

Today at 6 PM, join us in a speaker event from Dr. Peter Delfyett! Click the link in the bio to join.

Peter Delfyett received the B.E.(E.E.) degree from The City College of New York (1981), the M.S. degree in EE from The University of Rochester (1983), the M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees from The Graduate School & University Center of the City University of New York (1988).   His is PhD work focused on developing and utilizing a real time ultrafast spectroscopic probe to study molecular and phonon dynamics in condensed matter, using both supercontinuum and optical phase conjugation techniques.   After obtaining the Ph.D. degree, he joined Bell Communication Research as a Member of the Technical Staff, where he concentrated his efforts towards generating ultrafast high power optical pulses from semiconductor diode lasers, for applications in ultra-wideband optical signal processing and communications. Some of his technical accomplishments were the development of the world’s fastest, most powerful mode-locked semiconductor laser diode, the demonstration of an optically distributed clocking network for high speed digital switches and supercomputer applications, and the first observation of the optical nonlinearity induced by the cooling of highly excited electron-hole pairs in semiconductor optical amplifiers.   In 1993, he moved to University of Central Florida, where he is University Distinguished Professor, Pegasus Professor and Trustee Chair Professor of Optics, ECE & Physics in CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, and is currently serving as the Director of the Townes Laser Institute. In 2003, Dr. Delfyett founded “Raydiance, Inc.” a spin-off company developing high power, ultrafast laser systems, based on his research, for applications in medicine, consumer electronics, defense, material processing, biotechnology, automotive and other key technological markets.  He is a Fellow of the APS, IEEE, NAI, NSBP, OSA, and SPIE.

Highlight Black Physicists! For Black History Month, we’re highlighting the research of black physicists in the US. First off, Beth Brown! She was an X-ray astrophysicist with expertise in elliptical galaxies. Dr. Brown was one of the first to use NASA’s ROAST satellite to collect X-ray data on various galaxies. In this image is the optical blue luminosities compared to 0.5-2.0 keV X-ray luminosities (Brown & Bregman, 1999). In the background image, the Andromeda galaxy is shown next to the smaller dwarf galaxy, NGC 205, which is shown in Brown’s paper.

We hope you all are well and thriving this Black History Month! Next Wednesday, February 16th at 6:00pm, we are hosting the next event of our Astrophysics and Cosmology series with special guest Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi.
Dr. Oluseyi is a renowned astrophysicist, cosmologist, and professor, as well as the current executive president of NSBP. He is the author of the newly released, best-selling memoir A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars. He appears as a host and scientific authority on Science Channel television shows, How the Universe Works, Space’s Deepest Secrets, and Strip the Cosmos. Beginning in October, 2021, he also appeared as a judge on the Netflix series Baking Impossible. Additionally, Dr Oluseyi appears regularly as an expert on ABC News, CNN, and NBC news.
He will be talking about his journey through his undergraduate and graduate education, offering advice on the different career paths (traditional or non-traditional) that are open to physics majors, as well as announcing upcoming opportunities for NSBP members and other Black physics majors. There will also be a Q&A session for any students that have questions. We look forward to seeing you all there!
