It’s the high temperature time of year so remember this and be cautious of companies talking you into a new unit or money costing unnecessary repairs. Sadly but we see it every year.

It’s important to understand that residential air conditioning systems are generally designed to maintain about a 20° temperature difference from the outdoor air under normal design conditions. So if it’s 95° outside, maintaining around 75° indoors is considered normal. When we start seeing temperatures in the upper 90s or 100s with direct sun beating on the home, many systems will run almost continuously. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong.

There are several things homeowners can do to help their system perform its best:

• Leave the thermostat set at one temperature instead of constantly adjusting it.
• Change your air filter regularly.
• Make sure all supply and return vents are open and not blocked
• Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day. Blackout curtains can make a surprising difference.
• Use ceiling fans (running counterclockwise in the summer) to help rooms feel cooler.
• Avoid using ovens, dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during the hottest part of the afternoon.
• make sure attic’s have adequate insulation and proper ventilation.

If your home isn’t maintaining close to that 20° difference, or it seems to be getting worse than it used to, it may be time for a preventative maintenance visit. Sometimes something as simple as a dirty outdoor coil, a weak capacitor, a clogged drain, low airflow, or low refrigerant can make a significant difference in how well the system cools.
