Are Your Fuel Storage Tanks More Than 30 Years Old?

If you own older fuel storage tanks, there is a hard question worth asking now, not later: what is happening inside them?

For years, many owners saw no obvious warning signs. Then came the slow, expensive symptoms – filter clogging, sludge, unusual debris, seepage, repeated service calls, corrosion, downtime, lost product, and in some cases releases and regulatory headaches. By the time the problem is visible from the surface, the damage inside the tank may already be advanced.

Renewed Interest In Cap Price Programs As A Result Of The 2025-2026 Season

Heightened price awareness provides an opportunity for dealers to present a price cap solution.

The heating season of 2025-26 was a notable one: the coldest winter in over 10 years for some locations of the East Coast and a late-season price spike due to conflict in the Middle East.

Gross Margin That Survives Volatility

Five strategies to maintain margins in chaotic commodity markets.

Volatile commodity markets are an occupational hazard for propane and heating oil dealers, a point driven home by the turmoil in the Middle East. When wholesale prices swing dramatically within a single season, or even week to week, protecting gross margins takes more than competitive pricing. It requires systematic discipline across your entire pricing structure.

NEFI Communications Survey Results

A few months ago, NEFI asked readers of Oil & Energy and the NEON newsletter to complete a brief Communications Survey. The responses are in – and NEFI and the Oil & Energy staff thank you for your thoughtful comments and replies.

The industry was well represented among the respondents: more than 57% identified as a heating oil/Bioheat® fuel retailer, 11% as an industry services provider; 7% as a propane retailer, 5% as equipment manufacturer, 4% as a heating oil/Bioheat® fuel wholesaler, and 3% as HVAC Services only. There were also retirees, students, and retailers and wholesalers of other fuels.

Farms, Food, And National Security

Congress is trying to ease the burden on U.S. farmers – but will new legislation come in time?

It has been a very challenging time for most U.S. farmers, with federal nutrition programs being cut back, tariff wars hurting exports, and soaring input costs on items like fertilizer and diesel fuel.

Imports now account for a significant share of domestic supply, including roughly 60 percent of fresh fruit and 38 percent of fresh vegetables. Net farm income in 2026 is projected to remain flat at approximately $153.4 billion, which is roughly 24 percent below the record highs seen in 2022.

New Study Demonstrates Biodiesel Tax Credit’s Benefits For Consumers

A new independent study finds that the Section ‘40A’ Biodiesel Blenders’ Tax Credit (BTC) delivers significantly more value across the entire biofuel supply chain than its replacement, the ‘Section 45Z’ Clean Fuel Production Credit.

Key takeaway: As little as 20 percent of the ‘Section 45Z’ tax credit value flows through the supply chain to blenders and consumers, whereas with the Biodiesel Tax Credit, between 50 percent and 70 percent of the credit value passed to blenders and consumers.
