Leveraging a trusted service relationship spanning more than 15 years with the owner, we’ve secured a project with the M Resort Spa Casino for their new guest room tower. The project involved a new 14-story, 375-room hotel tower totaling 237,500 square feet, and complements the existing resort campus, which includes a casino, hotel, convention center, and event spaces.

Delivered through a plan-spec procurement method, we performed the controls and Building Automation System (BAS) scope and installed a new Delta Controls Direct Digital Control (DDC) system to integrate it with the resort’s existing Delta platform serving the hotel and casino. The Building Management System (BMS) control panels used for this tower were prefabricated in our shop environment.

Additionally, our controls engineers designed the shop drawings and coordinated system design to allow for streamlined connectivity across facilities.

We create world-class facilities for federal clients and meet stringent RFQ/RFP requirements and schedules for government facilities, including military bases and medical centers.

For our work on Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), the U.S. military's premier referral center, the design-build team delivered 1,030,000 square feet of new construction and performed approximately 500,000 square feet of renovations. In addition to consolidating and expanding services at WRNMMC, we designed a state-of-the-art in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory using specialized carbon filters in order to minimize volatile organic compounds in the air stream as well as high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filters to maintain a high level of indoor air quality and improve the IVF facility's success rate.

Our end-to-end solutions optimize the design, construction, and operation of state and municipal projects.

Through our work on the San Diego International Airport FIS Facility and to meet the specific project needs, we removed portions of the existing roof to make room for the new mechanical rooms, replaced the existing air handling units with 100 percent outside air systems, and installed two 10-ton fan coil units for new escalator enclosures, computer room air conditioners (CRAC), and exhaust fans for restrooms, a laboratory, kennels, and lockers.

We recently completed a renovation project for a municipal building office in Oregon, which included the construction of a new station and apparatus bay for fire vehicles. Operations were transitioned to this space, allowing tenant improvement work to proceed in the original building.

Some of the key challenges the team faced was maintaining continuous operation of existing systems to support ongoing activities, such as the water supply from the new building needing to be fed into the existing structure to keep it functional throughout construction.

Temporary heating and cooling systems were installed to ensure that the new building remained habitable and operational during renovation.

For a candy and food manufacturing facility, we were originally brought in to install process piping for steam, water, and compressed air to support a new product line. During our work on this project, our team had to adhere to strict food quality and safety standards to ensure that this product line was successful in its approach. 🍬

After project completion and our exemplary efforts, our relationship with global confectionery Mars Wrigley continued as we were chosen to work on the next product line and other aspects of the facility.

We’re proud to strengthen our relationship with the client and assist in helping them expand their product offerings.

For our work on a mission-critical data center campus in the Mid-Atlantic, our team is busy constructing four separate buildings.

Managing a simultaneous multi-building project of this scale introduces a high volume of moving parts and complex logistical challenges, all of which the site team is actively navigating.

For the separate buildings, our team is focused on the critical data center infrastructure, which requires collaborative efforts between our pipefitters, plumbers, and sheet metal workers.

During a recent pipe cutting task, our team demonstrated the correct standard operating procedure for executing manual cuts safely and effectively. As we work on this mission critical data center campus, we’re continuing to navigate the unique and dynamic operational landscape of this project with efficiency.

As a project manager at Southland, you have to be willing to oversee a project from all different phases of the building lifecycle, gain exposure to the field and the technical side of the work, as well as develop a keen understanding of how each person contributes to the projects’ success.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐎𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.

Branden began his journey in the MEP industry as a steamfitter helper, where he then joined the Local 602 apprenticeship program, and eventually made it to Southland where he started as a project engineer and was recently promoted to project manager.

During his time as a project manager, no two jobs have been the same. He values the chance to see projects through the construction, commissioning, and closeout phases, which has been instrumental to his growth.

As far as advice he would give to those interested in working as a project manager?
“Being organized, communicating well, taking ownership, and being willing to learn will take you a long way.”

During his time as a project manager, one of the most valuable lessons he’s learned is that that you can have the best schedule, budget, and plan in place, but none of it matters if the people involved aren't communicating and working together.

As far as advice he would give to those interested in working as a project manager?
“Don't be afraid of difficult projects. Some of the biggest lessons I've learned have come from the projects that didn't go according to plan. Those experiences build judgment, confidence, and the ability to lead when things get complicated — which is really what project management is all about.”
