Mohawk Amateur Radio Club

Mohawk Amateur Radio Club Amateur Radio Club serving hams in the
North Central Worcester County for 40+ years. Weekly net on 145.370 every Wed @ 7:00 PM

Meetings are the 4th Monday of the month at the Gardner Police Headquarters, 200 Main St, Gardner, MA. We are an active amateur radio club serving North Central Worcester County. Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet

or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Join us at our meetings every 4th Wednesday of the month 7:00 PM at the Gardner Police Headquarters, 200 Main St, Gardner, MA. Calendar of Events

Today’s Old Timer’s Luncheon was a bit short of raucous, but not by a whole lot. A total of 14 hams from the Mohawk Amateur Radio Club, from the Montachusett Area Radio Association*, or some who are members of both Mohawk and Montachusett** were in attendance, and including the one guest, everyone seemed to be finding someone they could talk to about something.

Once again, huge thanks to the waitstaff and kitchen crew at Westminster Café for allowing our group to commandeer the entire back section of the restaurant. Our food was delicious, and the efficient service was rendered with a smile! Also (per usual) the lights were being turned off as we vacated the premises. (There was SO MUCH TO SAY!)

Among our attendees (remembering that *=MARA; **=MARC and MARA membership) were our Western MA Section Manager Ray Lajoie, AA1SE* (Lunenburg); Doug Sargent, KA1VV** (Westminster); Pauline Carulli, KB1JXJ** (Leominster); MARA Secretary Glenn Capone, KC1EIJ* (Fitchburg); Scott Sargent, KC1QVO**; Chris Burnard, KC1TAT (Hubbardston); Leo Janssens, KC1YAX (Ashburnham); David Bramhall, KF4GAF (Phillipston); Gordon LaPoint, N1MGO** (Leominster); Jim Barclay, NS1J** (Royalston); Mary Barclay, W1KKM** (Royalston); MARC President Paul Topolski, W1SEX (Gardner) and his daughter, Sarah Topolski of Fitchburg; Dave Craig, WB1CEA (Petersham); and Brent MacAloney, WM1T (Westminster).

If you’re an amateur radio operator (any age; any license) or think you want to give it a try, you should have been there... but never fear, for there’s another Old Timers’ Luncheon planned for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Westminster, MA Café. We’d love to have you join us! (Just listen for all the gabbing!)

Remembering the many Silent Keys who gave their lives in service for our Country, and for the freedoms that allow us to continue the hobby of Amateur Radio.
We remember their sacrifices.
We honor their commitment to our freedoms.

Just a quick tease:
Mohawk Amateur Radio Club’s first 2026 POTA Activation, at the Ashburnham Wildlife Management Area at the end of Kelton Street was today!

Glumpy weather; apparently tick nirvana, given the number discovered throughout the event.

POTA attendees included Kevin Erickson, N1ERS; Andrew Detsikas, N1NLT; Gordon LaPoint, N1MGO; Doug Lepisto, N1DBL; Kiirja Paanenen, K1IIK; Cliff Wilder, W1CFW; Chris Burnard, KC1TAT; and not in photos, Shawn Martin, N1REK; and Mary Barclay, W1KKM.

More specifics in the near future!

First 2026 Mohawk ARC POTA activation today!
11am - “Until we’ve had enough” (+/- 2 hours)

Ashburnham Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/1ZndFdMuwFf1SxEG9
(Easy access from Gardner - Kelton St. past Camp Collier area and Brogan Rd. At that point the road turns into a well packed dirt road for maybe 200 feet and then you are at the end of the road and at the Ashburnham WMA.)
This is a new spot for the club!

If you aren't traveling far and have some time on today, do stop by. Bring a chair, and your lunch.

If POTA is new for you, check out the write-up (from May’s MODULATOR) by Kevin NIERS, with some pics from Andrew, KC1NLT.

Another great program at last night’s meeting, with Western MA Section Manager Ray Lajoie, AA1SE, who spoke about WESTERN MA TRAINING AND TESTING.

Ray told of the COVID-19 shutdown's effect on amateur radio, and how the initial Zoom classes were not ideal. The situation ultimately resulted in an excellent method of training and testing that allows for students to participate at their convenience, from wherever they happen to be at the time. Students can ask questions; in-depth discussions can be had with multiple points of view. If, for whatever reason, a student is unavailable for a "live" Zoom class, they can go over to YouTube to catch the recorded version.

"Subject matter experts" provide Zoom instruction, which not only helps student learn the material, but keeps the presentations fresh and interesting. The recorded classes are replaced as new sessions are offered. When test questions change, the recorded classes are taken down until the reflect the question updates.

This system also provides for additional student assistance, if needed, by offering extra sessions by appointment.
