Thea Bowman Leadership Academy Welcomes Dr. Marlon R. Mitchell as New Superintendent to Spearhead School Innovation and Transformation Initiative
GARY, IN – July 1, 2024 – Thea Bowman Leadership Academy is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Marlon R. Mitchell as the new Superintendent, effective immediately. Dr. Mitchell brings a wealth of experience in education and executive leadership to this role, positioning him to lead the Academy’s ambitious school innovation and transformation initiative.
Dr. Mitchell, who served as the Interim Superintendent of the School City of East Chicago, Indiana, and formerly held the position of Campus President at Ivy Tech Community College, has a rich educational and professional background. A proud graduate of Gary Roosevelt High School, he pursued his undergraduate studies in Business at Indiana University and earned a doctorate in Instructional Systems Technology.
With over 25 years as an educator and business professor and 30 years of executive leadership experience managing diverse workforces, Dr. Mitchell is exceptionally qualified to drive organizational change. His extensive expertise spans Business Management, Strategic Planning, Human Resources, and Talent Development.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mitchell has held various significant positions. His leadership roles have included serving as Board Chair of the Fiscal Management Board of the Gary Community School Corporation, Chairman and Founder of the Gary East Side Community Development Corporation, and the Institute of Leadership and Performance Improvement. Additionally, he has served as the Education Chair of the NAACP and held multiple other board appointments, further highlighting his dedication to community growth and development.
An active member of the interfaith community, Dr. Mitchell is also a noted speaker, teacher, and executive coach for the John Maxwell Team. His lifelong commitment to serving disenfranchised and vulnerable populations is evidenced by his extensive work in community development and education.
Dr. Mitchell believes that passion and purpose are essential to finding one’s true calling, a philosophy that will undoubtedly influence his leadership at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy. His vision for the Academy includes fostering an environment of innovation, excellence, and equity, ensuring that every student receives the support and resources needed to succeed.
