🚌 NEW KENTUCKY SCHOOL BUS SAFETY LAW 🚌
As students get ready to head back to school, the Georgetown Police Department wants to make everyone aware of important changes to Kentucky’s school bus stopping law, which took effect on July 15, 2026.
What You Need to Know:
🚦 Drivers must stop for a school or church bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, regardless of the direction they are traveling.
The only exception: Drivers traveling in the opposite direction are not required to stop only if the roadway has four or more lanes that are separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median.
Remember: A four-lane roadway with a painted center turn lane is not exempt. If there is no physical barrier or unpaved median, all traffic must stop.
Vehicle Owner Responsibility:
If a vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus and the driver cannot be identified, Kentucky law now presumes the registered owner or lessee was operating the vehicle unless that presumption is successfully rebutted.
Our children’s safety depends on all of us. Please slow down, eliminate distractions, and always be prepared to stop when you see a school bus displaying its flashing red lights and stop arm.
