"Heat pumps don't work in New Hampshire winters." We hear it a lot, and it's out of date. Today's cold-climate heat pumps are designed to keep heating even when temperatures drop below zero, and many Lakes Region homeowners now use them as their main heat source.

Curious whether one would work in your home? Details in the comments.

Heating with oil? A yearly boiler cleaning and tune-up helps it burn cleaner, use less fuel, and last longer. We service, repair, and replace oil boilers across the Lakes Region, and October is the ideal time to get on the schedule before the busy season.

Every house has one: the sunroom, bonus room, or addition that never feels as warm as the rest of the house. A ductless mini-split adds heat and cooling to that space without running new ductwork, and each zone gets its own temperature control.

Small thermostat habits can make a real difference on your heating bill this winter. Keep a steady temperature while you're home, lower it a few degrees overnight or when you're away, and avoid cranking it way up to heat the house faster (it doesn't). A programmable or smart thermostat can handle all of this for you.

Questions about upgrading your thermostat? Reach out through the link in the comments.

It's Fire Prevention Week, a good time for a quick home heating safety check:

• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
• Keep at least three feet of clear space around your furnace, boiler, and space heaters
• Never store paint, gas cans, or oily rags near heating equipment
• Have fuel-burning equipment inspected every year

If your system hasn't been looked at since last winter, we can help. Link in the comments.

New month, quick reminder: check your furnace or air handler filter. A dirty filter makes your system work harder, raises your energy bill, and can even cause it to shut down on a cold night. Most homes need a new filter every one to three months during heating season.

Want us to handle it along with a full tune-up? Link in the comments.
