For his most recent adventure, the Traveling Tumbler was literally on the rails – the Pennsylvania Rail Bike trail in the Pocono Mountains in PA. 🏔️

He provided a refreshing drink for one of our Chadds Ford, PA, employees as she and three of her friends from high school pedal-powered a quad rail bike along the Delaware Lackawaxen and Stourbridge Railroad tracks for an out-and-back 10-mile ride along the Lackawaxen River – enjoying scenic views, wildlife, and historic railroad landmarks along the way.

to our work at the Jefferson Memorial’s north plaza! After decades of settlement raised safety concerns, we helped design a 500-foot seawall supported by deep foundations to protect this iconic landmark in 2012. Even a 5.8 magnitude earthquake during construction confirmed the strength of the design.

When signs of instability emerge at a dam, understanding what’s happening—and how quickly conditions may be changing—is critical.

At Greenbrier Creek Dam in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, the situation was rapidly evolving. Progressing slope instability had taken out approximately half the crest width, while new longitudinal tension cracks were developing in the dam. With the potential for downstream consequences associated with a dam failure, Schnabel engineers responded quickly to assess the risks, recommend immediate actions and help the owner navigate the changing conditions.

Since 2022, Schnabel has supported Mount Sterling Water and Sewer (MSWS) with emergency incident response, geotechnical exploration, geophysical investigations and InSAR remote sensing to investigate the dam’s complex history and identify potential failure mechanisms. We also implemented an automated instrumentation and monitoring system that continuously tracks movement, water levels and other conditions to help provide early detection of changes associated with potential failure modes.

Interim Risk Reduction Measures were implemented in late 2025, and Schnabel continues to support MSWS in advancing the next steps of the project.

This project demonstrates how engineering expertise and innovative technology can work together to help owners better understand dam behavior, manage risk and make informed decisions about critical infrastructure.

Construction is nearing completion on the shaft and tunnel work for the Milestone Reservoir project in Loudoun County, Virginia, where a retired quarry is being transformed into a billion-gallon raw water reservoir.

The project takes an innovative approach to water supply resilience by transforming the quarry into a strategic water bank that can provide a backup supply when drought, storms, or poor water quality affect the Potomac River. By storing water when river conditions are favorable and drawing from the reservoir when conditions are less reliable, the project will give Loudoun Water greater flexibility in managing the region’s water supply.

The project includes a 300-foot-deep pump shaft and three intake tunnels at varying elevations, which will allow stored water to be withdrawn from the reservoir and conveyed to Loudoun Water’s treatment facility. A new 40-million-gallon-per-day pumping station will support the system. The multiple intake elevations will also provide flexibility in selecting water from different depths within the reservoir based on water quality conditions.

Converting a retired quarry into a functioning water-storage facility also requires specialized geotechnical and tunnel engineering. Schnabel is serving as lead geotechnical engineer and tunnel designer, supporting the project through design and construction. Our work includes the deep intake shaft and tunnels, as well as geotechnical considerations related to the quarry rock slopes. Steve Miller, Matthew Goff, and Eoin Durcan are among the Schnabel team members supporting these efforts.

Once complete, the Milestone Reservoir will provide up to two months of stored water for the region, helping Loudoun Water maintain a more reliable supply during droughts, storms, and periods when Potomac River water quality is impacted.

We’re proud to contribute our geotechnical and tunnel engineering expertise to this innovative approach to water supply resilience that will help provide reliable water for a growing community for years to come.

⛰️The Traveling Tumbler Takes on the Swiss Alps

The Traveling Tumbler recently ventured across Europe with an accounting assistant from our Glen Allen, VA, office, making stops in Milan and Lake Como, Italy, before heading into the breathtaking landscapes of Switzerland.

From Zermatt, Mürren, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen, and Lucerne, the tumbler took in stunning alpine views (including Stoos Ridge, pictured) while helping keep its travel companions refreshed along the way!

Along the journey, the tumbler also encountered some of Switzerland's impressive engineering marvels, including the extensive tunnel systems that connect communities throughout the Alps.

💦 A nature enthusiast at heart, the Traveling Tumbler enjoyed the dynamic landscape during a rafting trip down the windy and mighty Snake River through Hells Canyon, a 10-mile-wide canyon along the border of eastern Oregon, western Idaho, and a small section of eastern Washington.

🎣 He even brought some luck to two of our senior staff engineers and an intern from Boise – they caught some incredible sturgeon in the deepest river-carved gorge in North America.

What did our interns learn this summer? A lot!

Our 2026 interns worked on 334 projects, participated in 296 site visits and gained hands-on experience across a wide range of projects and disciplines.
