Creating spaces where everyone belongs is how community takes shape.

Recently, ODEC provided the second installment of its $100,000 commitment to Bennett’s Village, an inclusive playground project designed to bring children and families of all abilities together through play, connection, and community. Floyd Lively, Plant Manager at our Louisa facility, was proud to present the donation on behalf of ODEC.

We are honored to support projects like Bennett’s Village, helping remove barriers and create opportunities for more people to participate, connect, and thrive. At ODEC, powering opportunity means investing in partnerships and places that strengthen the communities we serve and create a brighter future for everyone.

This month, we are proud to spotlight Community Electric Cooperative and its commitment to serving members in southeast Virginia.

Community Electric Cooperative plays an important role in delivering reliable, affordable energy while supporting the people, businesses, and organizations that keep regions powered and empowered.
Over the last 15 years, Community has recorded a growth rate of roughly 1.5% per year in the number of meters connected and currently serves more than 11,000 accounts over its 1,590 miles of distribution line. Their focus on service, safety, and strong local relationships reflects the cooperative values that continue to guide our industry.

At ODEC, we are proud to work alongside member cooperatives like Community to help ensure dependable power reaches the homes, businesses, and critical services across the region.

Our responsibility is not only to meet current demand, but to ensure our system is prepared for the future.

ODEC team members recently attended the Bipartisan Leadership in State Government Luncheon in Richmond, hosted by the Sorensen Institute for Civic Leadership and sponsored by Southside Electric Cooperative. The event, which brought together leaders from across Virginia, featured an engaging discussion between U.S. Senator Tim Kaine and former Gov. Bob McDonnell.

As energy demand continues to grow at unprecedented levels, conversations like these provide valuable opportunities to engage with legislators, member cooperatives, and industry stakeholders about the future of energy.

At ODEC, we are collaborating with members, policymakers, and partners to develop diverse solutions that help ensure reliable electricity continues to power opportunity for the communities we serve today and in the future.

Strong energy solutions are built through collaboration.

At ODEC, we work alongside member cooperatives, industry leaders, and policymakers to address challenges that impact reliability, affordability, and long-term energy planning. By working together and staying focused on practical solutions, we help ensure communities continue to have access to dependable power.

Because cooperative is not just what we are, it’s how we operate. That cooperative difference is built on collective effort, especially as energy demand and infrastructure needs continue to grow.

Reliable energy has never been more important, and the way it is generated continues to evolve.

At ODEC, we are focused on delivering the dependable power our member cooperatives need while supporting a more modern and efficient energy landscape. As demand increases across homes, businesses, and industry, balancing reliability with long-term sustainability remains a critical priority.

We are committed to strengthening the systems that power our communities today while preparing for the energy needs of tomorrow.

Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944—a turning point in the fight for freedom during World War II.

We also remember the extraordinary sacrifice of the Bedford Boys, the young men from Bedford County, Virginia, who suffered the highest known per capita D-day losses of any American community. Their bravery and service remain a lasting testament to the strength of small communities and the profound cost of liberty.

As we reflect on their legacy, we are reminded of the deep roots our member cooperatives have in the communities they serve. Bedford County is part of the service territory of Southside Electric Cooperative, a member-owner of ODEC.

Together, we honor the men and women whose sacrifices helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

May we never forget their service, their courage, and their enduring legacy.

Energy demand is rising at levels not seen in generations, reshaping how the electric grid must perform.

At the same time, electricity prices are increasing nationwide, driven by factors such as fuel costs, infrastructure investments, and the growing need for power. These pressures are being felt most directly by residential customers, underscoring the importance of thoughtful, long-term planning.

At ODEC, we are strengthening our systems and taking a forward-looking approach to ensure our member cooperatives have the resources they need to serve their communities. Our focus remains on delivering reliable, affordable energy while preparing responsibly for continued growth.

NERC’s 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment shows PJM is expected to have adequate resources to meet typical peak demand, but the system is operating with less cushion than in the past.

This summer, according to NERC, PJM is projected to have approximately 187.4 GW of anticipated resources to meet an expected peak demand of roughly 161.3 GW. It’s a sufficient margin under normal conditions, but one that can narrow quickly during periods of stress.

That's why ODEC continues to focus on long-term planning, ensuring our members are powered by the dispatchable, reliable resources needed to meet growing electricity demand.
