Meet our resident songwriter, film school grad, and spelling bee champion! Forrist Barker is a perfect fit for Vescent – fast-paced, hands-on, creative, focused.

We asked Forrist, our new Warehouse Technician, to introduce himself:

I have almost 5 years of work experience in the warehouse/shipping/receiving field. A couple of years as a receiving tech at a company that made and manufactured drive-through car washes across the country – that was my first job in this field, and I immediately fell in love with the Mon-Fri daytime schedule, as I was previously working nights, and loved the hands-on, fast paced work environment and the team camaraderie as well as the equipment I would operate, such as the AS/RS inventory retrieval system and the aerial lift. Much like the laser printer here at Vescent, new equipment is always interesting, gratifying to learn, and downright fun. I also worked a couple of years as a shipping associate/lead at a third-party warehouse that stored and shipped a multitude of products from clothing to pharmaceuticals to skis, and I really enjoy the similarly hands on, fast paced environment, the close-knit team, and focused work with tangible results that goes into a shipping role.

My hobbies outside of work include playing guitar, writing, watching horror movies/series, reading comics, and spending time with my fiancée and two step-kids. Some fun facts about me are that I am a guitarist and songwriter in a band, I am a film school graduate and love all things movies (not just horror!), and I have won a spelling bee.

Introducing the FPGA guy, Markus Perkins!

Markus is Vescent’s FPGA-DSP Engineer. For the past ten years, he worked at Hitachi Rail on safe, highly reliable control systems for the railway market and is now looking to bring this high-quality mindset to the cutting-edge equipment at Vescent. Markus loves working on everything from software, over FPGAs, to hardware -- and he enjoys seeing a product mature from early prototyping all the way into customer’s hands.

In his free time, Markus is as much of a EE nerd as he is at work: he loves building his own little gadgets and software and will tinker with anything he can get his hands on. So if you ever let him borrow a device, better let him know in advance that you want it back in one piece ;D

When not doing any of that, Markus enjoys cycling and hiking, and has a soft spot for Japanese culture.

As a ‘kid from Queens,’ it was a thrill to speak during the United Nations General Assembly…”  Our CEO Scott Davis grew up right across the East River from the UN. Last week, he joined a panel there.  The panel, “The State of the Second Quantum Revolution,” was part of “Quantum for the Goals,” the first meeting of its kind, focused on how quantum technologies can help the UN reach its Sustainable Development Goals.  Scott shared the stage with Jenay Patel of IBM and Blair Robertson of Bellstate, with Mik Thobo-Carlsen of BloomsDay moderating.  Quantum is no longer just theory. Soon it will be part of how the world handles energy, climate, health, and security.  That raises new questions. Who takes the lead? Who sets the rules?  Answering them takes policymakers, investors, companies, and the scientists and engineers doing the work. This meeting put them in the same room.  Scott put it simply: “Disruptive technologies matter. Quantum matters.”  Quantum is now part of the UN discussion, and Vescent is part of that dialogue.  It was also great to see Scott and David Mandell of Massive together at the UN.  A huge thanks to Bohrealis for putting on the event, and to 55North, Kai Hudek, and Owen Lozman for organizing this inaugural meeting.  Let’s keep the conversation going as we drive quantum scale-up!  Link to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in the comments.

We were honored to attend an event hosted by Endeavor Colorado last week, held as part of Tulagi Music Fest (thanks, Dan Caruso and Caruso Ventures). Being part of this network, a group of companies doing serious, real work, is something we don't take lightly.

The evening had a fun surprise: a drink named after Vescent, "The Timekeeper," which was a first for our team. 🕰️

Many companies in the Endeavor network are generating hundreds of millions, even billions, in real revenue. We're humbled to stand alongside that kind of track record as we keep building the hardware behind deployed quantum technology, with over 10,000 products shipped so far and plenty of room still to grow.

None of that growth happens without our incredible Vescent team behind it.

Great two days in Bruges for the Frequency Combs: Fundamentals and Applications workshop, with lots of great conversations across the frequency comb community.

One of the highlights: a live, functioning RUBRIComb demo running at the booth. Nothing beats watching it run in real time.

We are excited to welcome Lena Bruno to our team as our new Prototype Engineer!

Lena has a background in physics and a wonderfully eclectic range of experience spanning the solar industry, software engineering, freeze-dried canine blood plasma, and technical writing. A generalist at heart, they appreciate the versatility their physics background has given them and are excited to be at Vescent, where there is room to explore a little bit of everything.

When they’re not at work, they might be crocheting in front of a horror movie, thrifting for nostalgic toys from their childhood, or debating with friends about which bug has the best life overall.

We are excited to welcome Robert Brienza to our team as one of our new Technical Sales Engineers!

Robert earned his PhD in experimental AMO physics from Rice University, where he focused on Strontium Rydberg atoms. He is drawn to sales and business development because it gives him the opportunity to meet many different people and learn about their novel ideas for the future of science.

Outside of work, Robert enjoys playing trumpet, studying Japanese, and spending time with family. He also likes tinkering with local LLMs on his home computer.
