In 2013, Daniels & Daniels Construction Company was honored to help bring a vision to life in the heart of downtown Morehead City—the Jib Plaza at Big Rock Landing.
For nearly 70 years, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has been one of the most prestigious sportfishing tournaments in the world. What began in 1957 as a local competition has grown into an internationally recognized event that attracts anglers from across the globe, generates millions of dollars in economic impact for Eastern North Carolina, and celebrates the rich sportfishing heritage of the Crystal Coast.
But Big Rock is about more than fishing.
Through the Big Rock Foundation, proceeds from tournament activities help support countless charitable causes throughout our region. Over the years, the foundation has provided millions of dollars in grants benefiting children, education, health care, conservation, military families, youth programs, and community organizations across Eastern North Carolina. The impact of Big Rock extends far beyond the scales and leaderboards—it helps strengthen the communities that make this area such a special place to live and visit.
The Jib Plaza, designed by MK Chalk Architecture, PA, was created as a gathering place where families, visitors, fishermen, and the local community could come together to experience the excitement of tournament week. At the center stands the iconic marlin statue—a backdrop for thousands of photos, celebrations, reunions, and memories over the years. The 17-foot, 1,200-pound bronze marlin statue at Big Rock Landing was erected in September 2013. Sculpted by world-renowned wildlife artist Kent Ullberg, the monument is a massive perpetual trophy and fountain centerpiece that has become a household backdrop for photos in beautiful downtown Morehead City.
Today, as tournament history continues to be made with record-breaking catches and excitement on the waterfront, we’re reminded of what makes Big Rock so special.
It’s more than a tournament. It’s a tradition. It’s an economic engine for our region. And it’s a force for good that continues to give back to Eastern North Carolina year after year.
Looking back more than a decade later, we’re proud to see Jib Plaza continue serving as the backdrop for so many unforgettable moments. For Daniels & Daniels Construction Company, it’s never just a project. It’s about building places that bring people together, strengthen communities, and create lasting memories long after construction is complete.
