In Confined Space Rescue, a common misconception is that the retrieval line used on an entrant (subject or rescuer) in a confined space must be attached to the Dorsal connection on a harness. That is not always the case. In many cases the Sternal connection on a rescue harness creates the same size or smaller profile as the Dorsal connection which meets the OSHA requirements. In other situations, the only method of attachment that would allow the entrant to be successfully retrieved from a space would be wristlets or anklets. If the entrant is unresponsive, wristlets or anklets are a last resort due to potential injury but may be necessary due to the situation.

The annual Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) Spring Conference is almost here! Join us 12–14 June in Juneau, Alaska, where hosts Juneau Mountain Rescue and Alaska Mountain Rescue Group are creating a great opportunity for collaboration, education, and networking with leading search and rescue professionals.

CMC is proud sponsor this worthwhile event again this year, as well as teaching a pre-conference class:

Learn a dynamic yet repeatable approach to leading a rope rescue call. Fine tune your approach to size-up, rescue planning, resource allocation, span of control, risk awareness and management, and the communication strategies to make it all come together.

Two-day class (June 10th and 11th) - both days required. Students should be prepared for movement on rope in a high angle environment. Fundamental rope skills required. Please bring helmet, harness and gloves.

No fee but registration required for pre course communication and planning purposes.

CMC is issuing a Product Safety & Inspection for the CAPTO™.

Through our internal inspection processes, CMC has found certain instances where the thread locker that secures the CAPTO cam set screw may not have fully cured. This potentially affects CAPTO 11 MM Gray (Part # 336011) and CAPTO 13 MM Red (Part # 336013) models from serial number 23191-001 through 26085-034. If the set screw becomes fully unthreaded, the cam spring may fall out, causing the cam to not function as intended. There have been no reports of any set screws coming loose in the field, but out of an abundance of caution we request that customers inspect for the presence and position of the set screw to ensure that it is installed properly. We have corrected this issue for current and future CAPTO production.

The same thread locker is also used as a secondary method to secure the pulley fl**ge. While we do not expect any issues, CMC still advises that customers also inspect the pulley fl**ge while inspecting the set screw position.

If you have a CAPTO, please immediately inspect your device using the inspection steps included in the Inspection & Safety Notice.

There are four basic categories of Confined Space Rescues:

The Rescue that never happens - prevented by proactive intervention
Self-Rescue
Non-Entry Rescue
Entry Rescue

The best rescue is one that never needs to take place because of following good procedures or proactive intervention. Self-Rescue and Non-Entry Rescue are the fastest for the subject and expose the rescuers to the least risk. An Entry-Rescue is the last resort and only done when the other options are not viable.
