Environmental science completed their grasshopper population survey today. We went back to the Johnson property to collect and mark additional grasshopper’s on Thursday and then today we calculated the population!

Environmental Science put the capture-mark-recapture lab into action today as they caught and marked 28 grasshoppers at the Johnson house. We will go back on Friday to capture and count the number of grasshoppers with and without marks to determine the grasshopper population.

We thought this was a low grasshopper year but 28 marked is a lot! The environmental science boys want to mark Fridays grasshoppers with red fingernail polish and go back on Tuesday! (That’s really pushing the survival and disturbance assumption.)

Ean Meyer visited the 8th hr STEM drone class today (Workforce Math also attended the presentation). He talked to the students about owning and operating a drone based ag sprayer business. Then we all went outside and Ean modeled how to map out a field, program the drone, and he showed us how the drone cover an acre in a couple minutes!

*you may remember Ean spoke to the class last year. He’s continuing to improve his operations and did an excellent job explaining how his business has changed over the past few years. He also specifically stated 5 reasons why operating an ag spraying might be the job for you and 5 reasons why it might not (including my favorite: problem solving on the fly in the field….sometimes literally!)

8th grades final science project involved using data from a set of experiments to build a cardboard boat large enough for 1 person to float in. All of the boats floated but stability was an issue. As a bonus twist we tested how many boats could hold two people.

Shout out to Sawyer and Taylor L who tested multiple groups boats! And a big thanks to Chloe and Taylor for allowing us to use their pool.

These kids worked hard this afternoon!
On the last day of school we do a volunteer project for the community. Cole and Jeffrey worked on clearing the sidewalk at the Graham City Park. It took 8 wheelbarrow loads and we didn’t even get it all done!

Austyn, Rosie, Brooklyn, Keeley, and Lilly volunteered to paint the posts and trim on the picnic shelter building.

Everyone did a great job!
