🌱 Lawn Tip Tuesday – Week 4

Why Topsoil Alone Doesn’t Fix Low Spots

Low spots are one of the most common lawn issues we see in West Michigan.

A lot of people try to fix them by adding more topsoil — which seems logical, but often doesn’t last.

Here’s why 👇
đź’ˇ If the base underneath is compacted or uneven, the soil will settle again.

Common signs:
âś… The low spot comes back after a few rains
âś… Water still pools in the same area
âś… Grass grows unevenly

Long-term fixes usually start with shaping and stabilizing the base before adding soil back on top.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the lawn — it’s what the lawn is sitting on.

đź’¬ Do you have a low spot that keeps reappearing every year?
You’re not alone.

Why Grass Won’t Grow Where a Stump Used to Be

Ever notice a bare or struggling patch long after a tree stump is gone?

That’s not bad luck — it’s science 🌳

When a stump is removed, what’s left behind can include:
• Decaying roots
• Compacted soil
• Nutrient imbalance

Grass roots struggle when they hit old wood or packed soil beneath the surface.

Common signs:
âś… Thin grass in a perfect circle
âś… Mushy soil after rain
âś… Weeds taking over that one spot

In many cases, that area needs proper soil prep and compaction relief before grass can thrive again.

This is one of those “looks fine on top, problem underneath” situations.

🌱 Lawn Tip Tuesday – Week 1 (West Michigan Edition)

Why Spring Lawns Struggle in West Michigan (and It’s Not the Grass)

West Michigan lawns go through a lot:
• Heavy clay soil
• Freeze–thaw cycles
• Snow piles sitting for months
• Compaction from plows, equipment, and foot traffic

Here’s something most homeowners don’t realize 👇
If water can’t move through your soil, roots can’t either.

Signs you might have a below-surface issue:
âś… Standing water after rain
âś… Thin or patchy grass near driveways & sidewalks
âś… Moss or weeds taking over certain areas

In many cases, the fix isn’t more seed — it’s proper grading and relieving compaction so the lawn can actually breathe.

We’ll be sharing one simple, local lawn tip every Tuesday to help our community understand why lawns struggle in West Michigan — and how to fix the root cause.
