Another cold one guys! Sharing some important tips for your hvac.
We have a weather event coming this weekend that may effect our customers that have Heat Pump systems heating their homes.
When outdoor temperatures are near freezing and its raining Ice will form and build on the outer areas of your heat pump condensing unit. This is NOT the normal frost build up on your condenser coil that normally thaws during the defrost cycle.
When these near freezing temps with rain are in your area you would be wise to switch your system over to "Emergency Heat" at the thermostat till the conditions improve. This turns the outdoor unit off and provides your heat using the electric heat strips within your air handler inside your home.
Ice building on the shell of your outdoor heat pump unit can cause serious damage to the condenser fan blade and outdoor condenser coil. During freezing rain events it basically builds icicles that can hang down into your unit that when they reach the fan blade they get chopped up and thrown into your condenser coil.
Switch your systems over to emergency heat this weekend till the freezing rain event is over. A little extra power usage is minimal compared to costly repairs due to allowing your heat pump unit to become an ice chopper.

Cold nights mean home protection prep! Turn off and cover outside hose stickers, insulate exposed attic and crawl space water lines, drip faucets and open cabinet doors on freezing temp nights, heat lamps in well houses. Be diligent to avoid repairs later!
