We transformed this formerly ordinary living room by vaulting the previously flat ceiling with site built timber trusses. A new 12 foot sliding glass door and four operable skylights with remote shades fills the room with natural light. Before, the deep porch overhangs on both sides of this room made for a very dark and claustrophobic space. We are accustomed to building this type of truss in a shop and placing them with a crane. Because we had to work beneath the existing roof they had to be assembled in place, piece by piece - a real challenge.

Throwback to a retro kitchen remodel we did a while back in a 1930s craftsman cottage. The appliances are all brand new but designed with 1950s nostalgia.

 When building an ADU sometimes we are able to add space beyond the size limit as “storage”. But when a bureaucrat squints a little too hard at the plans we must get creative. This decorative interior beam system just so happens to be engineered to carry a potential future “storage” floor load. Just in case the owners may need that extra space someday. Wink wink 😉

“The Gamble House” by Greene and Greene in Pasadena (Doc’s house in ‘Back to the future’) inspired the deep overhangs and “cloud lift” profiles on the long cantilevered beams, or “outriggers”.
