For residents at Heritage House in Napa, California, the garden means more than fresh lettuce.

Patch recently visited the Abode Services housing community, where residents rebuilding their lives after homelessness can harvest fresh greens and herbs grown right where they live.

The story captures the human side of food access. Fresh produce can help stretch food budgets, offer more choice and even reconnect people with memories of gardens they once tended.

The Flex Farm at Heritage House produces about 30 pounds of fresh food each month for residents, including romaine lettuce and cilantro.

It is a meaningful reminder as we close Hunger Action Month: bringing fresh food closer to people can create impact in ways that go far beyond the harvest.

A great way to close out Hunger Action Month: seeing one of our partners on ABC7 Chicago!

Hope Center in Blue Island is using indoor hydroponics to grow fresh food year-round for its community. Most of what they grow is donated to local food pantries, while the indoor garden also gives people an opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from.

For us, this is food access technology in action: helping organizations grow fresh food closer to the people they serve.

On Hunger Action Day, the Greater Chicago Food Depository is warning that changes to SNAP benefits are putting additional pressure on families and food pantries.

Today is Hunger Action Day.

For Fork Farms, today is an opportunity to celebrate the partners who are already working every day to bring fresh food closer to the people they serve.

Across our network, food pantries, schools and community organizations are using food access technology to grow fresh produce on site, involve more people in the growing process and strengthen the programs already serving their communities.

Featured Farm: Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County in Sanford, North Carolina.

Since 2022, Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County has grown fresh food on-site and distributed it to neighbors in need. Four volunteers operate four Flex Farm units, rotating the farms so they can harvest approximately every two weeks. Their crops include several types of lettuce along with herbs like cilantro, dill and basil.

In the last year, CUOCLC distributed 766,484 pounds of food through its pantry, including approximately 1,300 pounds of fresh produce grown on site with Fork Farms hydroponics units.

It is one more way this team is working to bring nutritious food closer to the community it serves.

Featured Farm: Madera Community College | Madera, California

At Madera Community College, the Introduction to Plant Science class is turning hands-on learning into fresh food for their community.

Students manage four Flex Farm hydroponic systems and grow fresh food for fellow undergrads throughout the semester. They take responsibility for everything from planting and transplanting to nutrient solution changes and harvesting.

Each semester, a class donates approximately 6 to 12 Flex Farm harvests to Maddie’s Food Pantry, the college’s on-campus resource providing free food and supplies to students. This program is a great example of education and food access working together in the same place.

Meet our next Featured Farm: nOURish Bridgeport in Connecticut

More than 900 pounds of fresh produce, grown in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and shared across the community.

Nourish Bridgeport is a volunteer-run nonprofit working to bring hope and greater food access to its neighbors.

Using 26 Flex Farm units and one Flex Acre, the team grows fresh produce for its Super Food Pantry, Hot Meals Program, local schools and other community programs. Harvests also support partner food pantries through Real Food CT, Food Rescue US and smaller local organizations in need of fresh produce.

So far in 2026, nOURish has grown and donated more than 900 pounds of fresh food. What stands out is not just how much they grow, but how many different ways that food reaches people.

Help Tufts students keep Farmie growing!

Our partners at Tufts University are raising $1,000 by September 26 to support Farmie, their campus hydroponic program that gives students hands-on opportunities to explore food systems, nutrition, agriculture and year-round growing.

Funds will help support Farmie operations, educational programming and continued access to fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers for the Tufts community.

Even a small contribution can make an impact. For $20, you can “adopt a growing pod” and sponsor the growth of one plant.

There’s limited time left to help students of Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy reach their goal.

Featured Farm: The Well Outreach in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee.

The Well Outreach started its hydroponics program to help meet demand for more fresh food for pantry guests. In just a few years, the program has grown from eight Flex Farm systems to 12 Flex Farm units, and a Flex Micro.

The program is run entirely by volunteers, including 11 Master Gardeners. The hydroponic farms are located where pantry guests can see them, making fresh food production part of the everyday experience and creating opportunities to learn about how food is grown.

Every Monday, the team harvests fresh lettuce, with part of the harvest staying in Mount Pleasant and the rest going to their food pantry in Spring Hill. From January through August 2026, the hydroponics program produced approximately 1,500 pounds of fresh lettuce!

We love seeing what happens when students are given the tools to grow, learn and share fresh food.

Our partners at Tufts University Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy are building on the impact of Farmie, their campus hydroponic program, with a new CSA pilot and continued opportunities for students to explore food systems, nutrition, agriculture and hydroponics firsthand.

Now, they’re raising funds to help keep Farmie growing throughout the school year. A $20 gift can “adopt a growing pod” and help support future crops, educational programming and student learning.
