🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 11

❌ MYTH: “Newer machines automatically make better parts.”

This one is a little tricky because… new machines really are pretty amazing! 😂

We've got some impressive equipment in our shop, and the technology available today can do things that older machines simply couldn't.

BUT…

A new machine doesn't automatically mean a perfect part.

There's still a person behind that machine who has to know what they're doing.

They have to understand:

🔹 The material
🔹 The tooling
🔹 The setup
🔹 The programming
🔹 Speeds and feeds
🔹 Tolerances
🔹 How the part needs to be made
🔹 How to recognize when something isn't right

You can have the newest machine in the shop, but if you don't have the knowledge and experience behind it, you're still going to have problems.

That's one thing I've really come to appreciate about manufacturing.

Technology is incredible—but experience is priceless.

At Castle Machine Company, we're lucky to have both modern equipment AND people who have spent years learning the trade.

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | WEEK 10!

We've made it to Week 10! 🎉

And this week's myth is one I probably would've believed before I started working in manufacturing. 😂

❌ MYTH: “Once the machine starts running, the machinist can just walk away.”

I mean… the machine is running, right?

The parts are being made.

So the machinist can go grab a coffee and come back when it's done?

Not exactly! 😂

There's actually a LOT going on while that machine is running.

Our machinists are watching and listening for things like:

🔹 Tool wear
🔹 Changes in sound
🔹 Vibration
🔹 Chip control
🔹 Coolant flow
🔹 Surface finish
🔹 Part dimensions
🔹 How the material is cutting
🔹 Whether everything is staying consistent

Sometimes an experienced machinist can hear that something isn't right before you can even see the problem.

That's the part I think is really cool.

The machine is doing the cutting…

…but the person running it is still watching, thinking, measuring, and making decisions.

At Castle Machine Company, our machines are a huge part of what we do—but the people behind those machines are what make the difference. ❤️

The machine may be doing the cutting, but the machinist is still doing the thinking. 🔧

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 9

❌ MYTH: “A machining quote is just looking at the drawing and putting a price on it.”

I used to think quoting was probably pretty simple. 😂

Look at the drawing.

Figure out how long it takes.

Give them a price.

Not quite! 😉

When an RFQ comes through our doors, there's a LOT that goes into figuring out what that job is actually going to take.

We're looking at:

🔹 What material is needed
🔹 How much material costs
🔹 How many parts are needed
🔹 What machine should make them
🔹 How much setup is involved
🔹 Programming time
🔹 Tooling
🔹 Outside services
🔹 Inspection requirements
🔹 How long the actual machining will take
🔹 Labor
🔹 Lead time

And sometimes what looks like a “simple part” on a print isn't nearly as simple once you start figuring out how you're actually going to make it.

That's why quoting takes experience.

You're not just putting a price on a piece of metal.

You're figuring out what it will take to turn that piece of metal into the finished part the customer needs. 🔧

At Castle Machine Company, we take our quotes seriously because we want to understand the job before we commit to making it.

The quote is really where the manufacturing process begins.

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 8

❌ MYTH: “If you only need a few parts, it should be quick and easy.”

I used to think this one made sense… 😂

4 parts should obviously be easier than 400, right?

Well… not always!

Whether we're making 4 parts or 400, there's still a lot that has to happen before those parts ever make it out the door.

We still have to:

🔹 Read the print
🔹 Figure out how we're going to make it
🔹 Get the material
🔹 Program the machine
🔹 Pick the right tools
🔹 Set up the machine
🔹 Set up the workholding
🔹 Prove out the program
🔹 Inspect the first part
🔹 Make any adjustments
🔹 Run the parts
🔹 Inspect the finished parts

And here's the tricky part…

When you're only making a few pieces, all that setup and preparation has to be spread over fewer parts.

So sometimes those 4 parts can take almost as much preparation as a much larger production run.

It doesn't mean small jobs aren't important! ❤️

It just means there's a LOT more that goes into making a precision part than most people ever see.

A day late, but we couldn't skip it! 😂

Labor Day gave us an extra day to appreciate the people who make manufacturing happen, so this week's Machining Myth Monday felt especially fitting.

❌ MYTH: “Manufacturing is all about machines and technology.”

✅ REALITY: It's about people.

Yes, we have some pretty impressive equipment here at Castle Machine Company. But behind every machine is a skilled person making decisions, solving problems, and making sure the job gets done right.

Our team brings experience and skill to every part of the process:
🔹 Reading prints and specifications
🔹 Programming and setting up machines
🔹 Selecting tooling and machining strategies
🔹 Solving problems when things don't go according to plan
🔹 Holding tight tolerances
🔹 Inspecting parts and maintaining quality
🔹 Taking pride in the work they produce

Technology continues to change manufacturing, and we're proud to invest in the equipment that helps us serve our customers.

But technology doesn't replace experience, craftsmanship, problem-solving, or pride in your work.

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 6

❌ MYTH: “CNC machines do all the work.”

I'll admit it… if you've never been inside a machine shop, it's pretty easy to think that's how it works. 😂

Load the material.

Push a button.

Let the machine do its thing.

If only it were that easy! 😉

There's a LOT that happens before that machine ever starts cutting.

Our machinists have to:
🔹 Read the print
🔹 Figure out the best way to make the part
🔹 Choose the right tools
🔹 Program the machine
🔹 Set everything up
🔹 Adjust speeds and feeds
🔹 Watch the process
🔹 Make adjustments when needed
🔹 Inspect the finished part

And when something doesn't go according to plan?

That's when experience REALLY matters.

A CNC machine can follow a program...

…but it doesn't have years of experience knowing when something doesn't sound right, look right, or feel right.

That's the skill our machinists bring to the table every day. ❤️

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 5

❌ MYTH: “The faster you run the machine, the faster you get the parts.”

✅ REALITY: Faster isn't always better!

It might seem like a simple equation:

Run the machine faster = make more parts. 🤷‍♀️

But machining doesn't quite work that way.

There has to be a balance between speed, quality, tooling, and consistency.

If you push a machine too hard, you can end up with:

🔹 Worn-out tools
🔹 Bad surface finishes
🔹 Parts that don't hold the right dimensions
🔹 Broken tooling
🔹 Scrap and rework
🔹 More downtime

Our machinists and programmers have to consider a LOT more than just how fast the machine can run.

They're thinking about the material, tooling, speeds and feeds, setup, tolerances, and what will produce the best part while keeping the process efficient.

Sometimes, slowing down in the right place actually helps us make parts faster overall! 🔧

At Castle Machine Company, we're always looking for ways to improve—but we're not willing to sacrifice quality just to make a machine run a little faster.

Because it's not about making parts as fast as possible.

It's about making good parts as efficiently as possible.

🔧 Machining Myth Monday | Week 4

❌ MYTH: “If two parts look the same, they must be the same.”

👀 REALITY: Not always!

Two parts can look almost identical and still be completely different when it comes to how they fit, function, and perform.

In our world, the little things can make a BIG difference.

A hole that's just a little off…
A measurement that's only a few thousandths different…
A surface that's not quite right…
The wrong material…

Things you might never notice just by looking at a part can make a huge difference once that part goes into an assembly or machine.

That's why there's so much more to precision machining than simply making something look right.

It has to measure right, fit right, and work right. 🔧

And that's where the experience of our machinists, careful planning, inspection, and quality control really matter.

At Castle Machine Company, we're not just making parts.
