A couple of years ago, Double Hung took on the window and exterior door restorations for Knoxville's extraordinary Eugenia Williams house on the Tennessee River. Although we completed our portion of the work over a year ago, other trades continued even up to today.

The Aslan Foundation expects to finally open it to the public in Spring of 2026.

Windows are said to be the souls of the structure and for those in our line of work, it’s easy to feel a connection to both the souls who built them and those who’ve gazed through them.

One of the great joys of preservation is the storytelling. It’s amazing what memories a simple look through a window can bring backs. These stories and memories stay alive through our work.

On this day dedicated to one of the greatest souls the world has ever known, there’s serendipity in our shop, as we put the finishing touch on some of the most important windows we’ll ever save.

Being entrusted to restore The Dr. King Birth Home Windows is easily the greatest honor our company has known to date. The trust placed in us to keep Dr. King’s story and memory alive through our work is not taken for granted.

Today we celebrate and honor Dr. King, ensuring the windows from his childhood home will remain intact for generations to come and with them the story of his life, his mission and his work.

Double Hung Historic has been plying the trade of window restoration for nigh-on 26 years now. Sometimes we turn a profit, and sometimes... not so much. But we've made it through largely by graduating from "the school of hard knocks" and staying focused on quality and customer satisfaction. We didn't have a script to follow, just an abiding love for what we do.

When we started out, had we had the guidance offered below by fellow puttyhead Scott Sidler of The Craftsman Blog, lord only knows how much better off we'd be today.

If you're a potential window restoration customer, read it to understand the complexity of what you are buying and why it ain't cheap.

If you're a person or company who had the good sense to start a business to help save America's windows, but consistently end up with 'too much month left at the end of the money', read it and apply it to what you are doing because we need you to stay in business.

If you have ever thought about hanging out your shingle and starting a window restoration business then you know that figuring out what to charge and why is HUGE question. This post should give you some great ideas to consider.

The General Services Administration recently awarded The Charles R. Jonas Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse Renovation project as their first ever Project Of The Year. This National Award of Construction Excellence is given to the single project that most demonstrates the attributes of an exceptional project delivery and teamwork. Double Hung was fortunate to be a part of such a truly remarkable project team where collaboration was the standard and not the exception.
