As we approach the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, many of us across the Upstate still remember the morning of September 27, 2024 and the devastation left behind.
Helene was the deadliest hurricane to impact South Carolina in the last 100 years, claiming 49 lives. It brought hurricane-force wind gusts, flooding and 21 tornadoes across the state. Nearly 5,000 homes were damaged, and downed trees and power lines contributed to widespread destruction and prolonged power outages. (SC Emergency Management)
Here in the Upstate, trees were a major part of that destruction. According to the National Hurricane Center, Spartanburg County had 170 structures with major damage and another 269 with minor-to-moderate damage — with the majority of that structural damage caused by falling trees. Across South Carolina, Helene caused approximately $83 million in timber damage, while insured losses reached approximately $1.2 BILLION. More than 1.3 million electric customers lost power, and 912 roads were closed by fallen trees and other debris. (National Hurricane Center)
