Your water heater didn't get slower. The water going into it got colder.
A tank set to 120 degrees is already heating incoming water by 50 degrees or more. As the ground cools in the fall, that gap gets wider and the tank runs longer to catch up.
So a shower that felt instant in July can take a beat longer in October with nothing actually wrong.
Before you assume the tank is failing, wrap the first few feet of exposed hot and cold pipe near it with foam sleeves from the hardware store. That's a weekend job, not a new tank.

New heat pump. New ductwork. A whole-home dehumidifier. An encapsulated crawlspace. All in one house, for one customer we're grateful for.

Here's everything that went into Jami's project:
-3-ton Rheem packaged heat pump
-A new duct system including two added supply lines and a relocated return
-Honeywell whole-home dehumidifier
-Crawlspace mold treatment and full encapsulation

Thank you, Jami, for trusting us with all of it!

Space heaters start about one in three home heating fires, but they're behind more than 8 in 10 of the deaths.
Cool mornings in the 50s are when people plug one in before they bother with the furnace.
Most of the risk is the cord, not the heater. Plug it straight into the wall, never an extension cord or power strip. Keep it three feet from anything that can burn, and shut it off before you leave the room or go to bed.
We'd rather you do that for free than have us out for something we could've told you over the phone.
What's sitting within three feet of yours right now?

Slide 1 ran for 20+ years in Greer. Swipe to see what replaced it.

A 16 SEER2 variable-speed Rheem heat pump, paired with a gas furnace. That setup is called dual fuel.

Heard a heat pump can't keep up in an Upstate cold snap? This setup is built for that.

Most winter days here, the heat pump heats the house fine and usually costs less to run than gas.

On the coldest nights it has to work much harder. That's when the gas furnace takes over.

Heat pump savings most of the winter. Gas heat when it's actually cold.

Fall for Greenville starts tonight. The kickoff concert is Thursday evening, and the festival runs Friday through Sunday, October 9 to 11, all along Main Street downtown. Admission is free.
We'll be in the crowd like everybody else. If you're heading out for the weekend, set the thermostat back a few degrees before you leave. Nobody needs to heat an empty house while they're eating their way down Main.

That steam rolling off your outside unit on a cold morning isn't smoke. Your heat pump is defrosting itself.
Below about 40 degrees, frost builds on the outdoor coil. The unit flips into reverse for a few minutes, melts it off, and the meltwater steams in the cold air.
It happens most on damp mornings in the high 30s, not on the coldest, driest nights. Two or three times an hour can be normal.
If it clears in 10 to 15 minutes and the house stays warm, nothing is wrong. No service call needed. Call us if it runs longer than that or the heat stops keeping up.

If your thermostat runs heat before breakfast and AC by three, the setpoints are too close.

September swings hard here. Upper 50s in the morning, 84 by the afternoon. On AUTO with heat at 70 and cool at 72, both sides run in the same day and you pay for both.

The fix is the deadband (the gap between your heating and cooling setpoints). Give it at least 4 degrees. Heat at 68 and cool at 74 covers a normal Upstate September day.

Most thermostats let you set a minimum deadband in the advanced or installer menu. No service call needed.

What's your gap set to right now?

Today is about working people.

Not one trade or one job. Everybody who gets up, shows up, and puts in an honest day so their family has what it needs.

The Upstate is full of them. We get to meet them every day all over Greenville & Spartanburg Counties. Good people who work hard and don't make a big deal about it.

To all of you, and especially our own crew: it's been a busy year. Enjoy this one. You earned it!

Happy Labor Day from all of us at First Class Heating & Air.

Pick a 70 degree morning this month and run your heat for 15 minutes.

You'll probably smell burning dust. That's normal. It's what settled on the heat exchanger or the electric strips over the summer, cooking off, and it should clear within about 15 minutes.

What isn't normal is a smell still hanging around after 20 minutes, or anything like hot plastic or scorched wiring. Shut it down if you get that.

Finding a heat problem on a mild September morning means you schedule a repair. Finding it on the first 32 degree night in November means waiting in line with half of Greenville County.

Most of what we find in September is minor. That's the point of looking now.
