For years, the mindset with alfalfa weevil was to wait it out. Let the first cutting take care of it or hope for rain to knock populations back. With today’s hay value and the importance of quality feed, that approach can cost you.

This year especially, with earlier pressure and visible feeding already showing up, waiting may not be the best option. The further we get from harvest, the more damage these weevils can do. Early scouting and timely treatment can make a big difference. Smaller larvae are easier to control, and catching them early can help protect both yield and quality.

If you are seeing activity, now is the time to take a closer look and talk through a plan with your Logan Ag team.

Alfalfa weevil is showing up earlier than usual this season, and in some cases, it’s already causing noticeable damage in the field. What might look like herbicide injury could actually be insect feeding, leaving behind that frosted appearance where only the veins remain.

Taking a few extra minutes to slow down and scout can make a big difference. These pests are easy to miss at first, but they will start moving if you give them a moment. With shifting wind patterns and more acres in cover crops, there is increased potential for insect pressure moving between fields.

If you are seeing signs or have questions, reach out to your Logan Ag team to talk through next steps.

Waterhemp is already starting to emerge across the area following recent rain and warming conditions. Even fields without spring tillage are showing early pressure, which makes timing especially important right now.

The most cost-effective way to manage waterhemp is to control it before it ever emerges. Once plants get above four inches tall, control becomes more difficult and often more expensive, especially later in the season when options are more limited.

A strong residual herbicide program remains the foundation for success on both planted fields and those going to beans. Following that with a post-emerge residual application 21 to 28 days after soybean emergence helps extend control and reduce the risk.

Addressing any early emerging waterhemp now can make a significant difference in how clean fields stay through the rest of the growing season. Waiting too long can lead to added cost, more passes, and increased pressure later on.

If you have questions about timing or what makes the most sense for your fields, connect with our team at Logan Agri-Service to talk through your options.
