The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean your furnace filter. Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce a system's efficiency significantly. With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil's heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by 5% to 15%

As the snow starts to drift against your house, homeowners with high-efficiency furnaces should make sure their fresh air intake and exhaust pipes are free of snow. They're usually white plastic pipes that come out of the side of a home. A blocked intake pipe or exhaust vent could result in carbon monoxide poisoning. The same is true for dryer vents. Check vents frequently during periods of heavy or blowing snow.

Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “invisible killer” because it’s a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. More than 150 people in the U.S. die every year from accidental CO poisoning from generators or fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fire places. Breathing CO at high levels can kill you.

Make sure you have carbon monoxide alarms inside your home to provide an early warning of increasing CO levels. These alarms should be placed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home. If the alarm goes off, or you think you may have CO in your home, call 911.

Yesterday we had a customer call because she had been feeling dizzy and light headed but was better when she opened her door. We sent someone over immediately to find that her furnace was emitting carbon monoxide. This customer did have a co detector but it did not go off! Please remember you should have several throughout your home and each of them should be tested once a month. If they have replaceable batteries you should replace them every 6 months! You will not always feel the effects of a co leak in your home like this customer did so please take every precaution you can to protect your family!

CO Detectors are so important! Please make sure your home has one!

One of the deadliest gases out there is carbon monoxide, and what makes it even more dangerous is the fact that it is odorless and colorless. As a poisonous gas, CO is unfortunately a by-product of many different fuels, more particularly when they are incompletely burned. The list includes that of coal, kerosene, oil, wood, propane, and even natural gas.

You should know that most if not all equipment and machines that use internal combustion engines like cars, power washers, generators, and lawnmowers product carbon monoxide, and when they do, everyone around or near those machines risk exposure to it.

Health Benefits of a whole home humidifier!

Having a properly humidified indoor air environment – with the ideal indoor humidity being in the 35% to 45% range – has many proven health benefits according to the Mayo Clinic.

The benefits include reduced allergies, other respiratory conditions, incidence of chapped lips, sore throats, dry skin, and sinus irritations.

Besides the improved health, quality indoor air makes the living environment much more comfortable, and can also help preserve wood floors, wood furniture, and other home items.

Winter is Coming – 5 Simple Steps to Prepare Your Furnace

1. Replace your air filters.
The change in seasons is the perfect time to replace your indoor air filters. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing air filters is the most important maintenance task to ensure the efficiency of your heating and cooling system

2. Get your ducts in a row.
Debris and holes in your ductwork can cause your heating unit to work harder than it needs to in order to heat your home. Fall is the perfect time to schedule maintenance with a trusted HVAC contractor to ensure your ducts are ready.

3. Vet your vents.
Over time, vents accumulate dirt and debris, which can clog the openings and cause heating issues. Luckily, removing and cleaning the vents with a wet cloth is a quick fix. While you’re at it, be on the lookout for items blocking the vents and remove if possible.

4. Take your furnace for a test ride.
It’s important to test your furnace before the cold hits. When you turn your heating unit on, listen for abnormal sounds, such as banging or rattling. In addition, check your thermostat to ensure that the heating unit is doing its job and each room is a comfortable temperature.

5. Practice safety first.
Be sure to remove any clutter surrounding your heating unit to avoid a potential fire hazard and test your carbon monoxide detector, replacing the existing batteries if necessary.

A brief inspection of your furnace today could keep your system running worry-free throughout the winter, especially older units. A qualified technician can help you do a more thorough inspection to avoid a system failure in the coldest months of the year. Winter is just around the corner, so be sure to get a professional’s opinion before you’re caught in a snowstorm.

With the rise of natural gas prices, replacement of your standard efficient furnace with a high efficient unit may save you significant $$$
What is the difference between a high and standard efficiency furnace? What are the benefits of a high efficiency furnace? Will it save you money? A standard efficiency furnace provides approximately 80% annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE). This means that, for this type of furnace, 20% of the energy is expelled as exhaust. Today’s high efficiency furnaces offer close to 95% or more AFUE, which translates to a savings of hundreds of dollars a year for the average size home. Many high-efficiency furnace models also have advanced motors that use less electricity and are extremely quiet.
