How To: Tell if your propane tank is leaking.

Use your eyes, ears, and nose to detect the warning signs:
- You SMELL 👃 “rotten eggs” or sulfur 🤢
- You SEE 👀 yellow flames or irregular flames 🟡 Propane always burns blue 🔵 !
- You HEAR 👂a hissing sound coming from your tank 🐍

If you smell, see, or hear these warning signs leave the area immediately.

Report the leak from a neighbor's home and call 911. Afterward, you can contact Penn-Jersey for assistance at 609-654-2964.

Safety Tip: Don’t store your propane tank in direct sunlight.

Even in winter, the sun can do some real damage.

Never store your 20lb propane tank in an area that reaches 100 degrees or above.

Since you cannot store a propane grill tank indoors, we recommend storing your tank in a shaded area. Or covering your tank with a cover that is specifically manufactured for a propane tank.

How To: Use the “Hot Water Test” to check your propane tank.

Unlike larger above-ground or underground propane tanks, many 20-lb propane grill tanks do not come with a provided gauge.

Here’s one way to check your propane tanks levels:
- Fill a bucket with hot water
- Unhook your propane grill tank
- Carefully pour the hot water over your tank.
- Place your hand on the side of the tank and feel for cool areas.
- Propane absorbs the heat, so wherever you feel the cold spot is your propane level.

Safety Tip: Don’t clutter your above-ground propane tank.

Many homeowners who have above-ground propane tanks may want to decorate or camouflage their tanks to disguise them.

Do not block access to your tank or put anything on it that could ignite by following these guidelines:
- Don’t put anything directly on top of the tank or let anything lean on the tank
- Don’t place anything flammable near the tank (i.e., paper, leaves, debris)
- Don’t hide the tank or obstruct its path so service pros cannot locate it.

Make sure to follow safety guidelines: https://bit.ly/3PkRmZZ to ensuring safe access to your above ground propane tank.

How To: Read your propane tank gauge.

Just like you monitor your car's gas levels, you should monitor your propane tank levels regularly. Here’s how:
- For underground propane tanks: look for a small plastic dome, about 12 inches in diameter, and often green in color.
- Remove the dome to reveal the gauge underneath.
- The dial on your propane tank gauge will display numbers 10 to 80.

These numbers represent the percentage of gas left in your propane tank. For example, if the dial reads ‘75,’ your tank is 75% full.

If your tank falls below 20%, it’s time to refill.
