Power Outage: About 250 members in and near Glyndon are currently experiencing a power outage. Red River Valley Co-op Power crews will begin feeding these accounts from other sources to restore power. We have reports of six downed power poles in that area so once sections of line have been switched around to restore power; crews will begin working on the permanent solution. Thank you for your patience.

Outage update: There are still scattered outages throughout the service territory as heavy, wet snow continues. Road access on gravel and secondary roads continues to be very poor and that is slowing outage restoration in those areas. The outages themselves are small in number, but are scattered. Thank you for your patience.

Due to extreme cold temperatures locally and electric grid issues elsewhere in the U.S., MISO – the region’s grid operator – declared a Maximum Generation Event this morning (Jan. 24). This means the regional electric grid was under significant stress, with energy supply struggling to keep pace with demand.

During a Maximum Generation Event, Minnkota (Red River Valley Co-op Power's wholesale power provider) is required to use its demand response program to help reduce energy demand by controlling off-peak loads. While this specific event has concluded, the region remains in a Maximum Generation Warning and additional off-peak load control may be required throughout the weekend and into next week. We will keep you informed via our social media channels should system conditions change. Thank you to our members for your patience and understanding during times of extreme weather and high energy demand.

Forecasted extreme cold over the weekend and into next week is expected to significantly increase electricity demand across the region. As a result, members may experience extended load control hours through our off-peak program.

The off-peak program helps protect your cooperative from having to purchase expensive supplemental power during periods of high demand. Wholesale energy market prices are currently extremely high due to frigid temperatures, winter storm impacts across the southern United States, and additional strain on regional electric generation and transmission infrastructure.

Your cooperative and Minnkota Power Cooperative, our wholesale power provider, are closely monitoring grid conditions 24 hours a day. Our priority is to maintain system reliability while minimizing exposure to high market prices that ultimately affect members.

We will continue to provide updates on our website and social media channels as conditions change. The current status of demand response can be found at https://redriver.minnkotadr.com/. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this period of extreme weather.
