Walker is greater than the sum of our parts. One of the most challenging parts of construction is managing multiple subs on complex tasks. General Contractors need to strike a careful balance of control and profitability to accomplish large, complex projects.

Walker was selected for a major job in New York for our expertise in two areas – diving underwater construction and concrete cutting. Pictured here are our two businesses, with a primary Project Manager, managing a complex scope of:

• Wire Sawing: Horizontal and vertical saw cuts on concrete seawall face
• Concrete Void Repairs: Using grout to fill existing cavities in the structures
• Pile Wraps: Replacing the coating on sixteen piles damaged at installation
• Anode Installation: Installation of 100 anodes to prevent future damage

Given the scope of the overall project and tight timeline, we suggested underwater wire sawing as the fastest way to remove 1,400 linear feet of concrete and rebar, so voids, wraps, and anodes could then be quickly addressed. End result will be extended life of seawall on piers and piles of four dolphins (large marine crash barriers).

Walker - we are the diving underwater construction and cutting experts to complete complex projects on time and within budget.

P.S.: That is our American Flag being flown for July 4th, but the job is still ongoing

Walker displayed our new truck at the Woodland Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary “Dine & Donate and Touch‑A‑Truck” events on Sunday, August 2, 2026. This was a unique opportunity to support a great cause, let truck enthusiasts check out our equipment, meet members of our team, and learn more about the diving and concrete cutting trades. Missed the event and want to learn more? Reach out to us today and we'll tell you all about what we do to support America's critical infrastructure.

Walker was proud to receive two 2025 awards from Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey (ACCNJ) for zero lost workdays.

Safety needs to be a priority to make sure our associates make it home every day. OSHA and safety experts find that:
* Frequent safety conversations keep hazards "top of mind" and reduce complacency. OSHA emphasizes that regular safety conversations between supervisors and workers are a key driver of a strong safety culture and injury reduction.
* Toolbox talks and daily safety meetings reinforce safe behaviors, hazard recognition, and worker participation much more effectively than infrequent training.
* A 2025 academic review of toolbox talks found positive outcomes across studies, including improvements in workers' safety knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

Safety culture is an evolution and is never complete, but we are proud of our accomplishments and happy that our people are safe.

Great article by Brandon Spiegel at Under Construction News about the role diving underwater construction plays in maintaining New York City's critical infrastructure.

The article details the complexity of maintaining century old infrastructure in low visibility environments. Walker's President, David Earp, contributed to the article explaining, "everywhere infrastructure touches the water, it deteriorates fast, so it has to be repaired." He further expounded that, "the diver goes underwater and he's by himself. Often he can't see the work - and he still has to perform it."

Much of the unionized commercial diving work in New York is performed by members of Dockbuilders and Timbermen Local 1556, a specialized local within the New York City District Council of Carpenters. Many enter through commercial or military dive schools, followed by union training pathways. Earp further stated, "you learn how to actually do the work through experience and apprenticeship."

The repairs that are happening constantly is befitting of a city that never sleeps. Similarly, Walker is there day and night keeping piers, bulkheads, water supply systems, dams, and marine terminals operational for the next 100 years.

Great job by the Walker team for removing what was left of a failed topping slab. A milling machine took off the main portion of the failed topping slab, leaving behind a 10” wide and 2” high minor curb. The client contacted Walker to remove this minor curb, thus leaving the topping slab flush to the original bridge deck.

Curb saws are used for, in most cases, vertical faces of concrete commonly used in curbs, median barriers, bridge sidewalks, abutment walls, sidewalk trip hazards, and any vertical surface that needs to be cut flush to the surface. The blade can also be adjusted at an angle to create curb aprons, and ADA-compliant crosswalks. Blades can be used in varying sizes, with larger ones up to 54” in diameter, which would yield a ~24” cut.

Curb saws are preferable to wall saws on long runs due to speed and productivity. Wall saws require setup to include anchors, track drilling, installation of track, and potentially patching once complete. A curb saw set up time is far less than a wall saw and occupies less space on the job site.
There are times and places where a wall saw is the right solution, which we will cover in another topic. However, if you have a long, linear curbs, highway/DOT curb work, and have a need for quick setup and breakdown, the curb saw is the right tool for the job.

What motivates you to work safely?

Walker received recognition last week for its commitment to safety at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal Project. All contractors must complete the daily Start Card prior commencing work. This card requires respondents (in our case Foremen) to respond to questions about PPE, PFDs, jobsite risks, communication, safe access/egress, tools and equipment being used, and overall crew health and readiness. Walker's was consistently the most thorough and timely.

One question clearly stood out: What makes you work safely? Answer: My family. Have a safe and productive week.
