What's the Best Thermostat Setting to Save Money This Summer? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!

As summer arrives, we hear this question from homeowners across Hampton Roads and the Peninsula.

Today's Question:
"What's the best thermostat setting to save money during the summer?"

Lee's Answer:

There isn't one perfect temperature for everyone.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 78° for efficiency, but many homeowners find that uncomfortable—especially during our humid Virginia summers.

The reality is that comfort varies from person to person. Humidity, activity level, age, medications, hormonal changes, and personal preference all play a role.

For many families, comfort falls somewhere between 72° and 76°.

A few things to keep in mind:

✅ Higher thermostat settings generally use less energy

✅ Lower temperatures mean longer run times and higher utility bills

✅ Humidity affects comfort as much as temperature

✅ Ceiling fans can help rooms feel cooler

✅ Consistent settings are usually more efficient than constant adjustments

The best setting isn't necessarily the lowest.

It's the one that keeps your family comfortable while fitting your budget.

Your outdoor unit needs airflow to do its job.

On the Virginia Peninsula, pollen, leaves, grass clippings, and debris can slowly build up around your condenser and restrict airflow.

Can Closing Vents in Unused Rooms Save Money? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!

We hear this one all the time from homeowners across Hampton Roads and the Peninsula.

Every Saturday morning, Lee answers one of your real HVAC questions right here.

Today's Question:
"If I close the vents in rooms I don't use, will it lower my energy bill?"

Lee's Answer:

It seems like it should.

After all, why cool or heat rooms you're not using?

But in most homes, the answer is actually no.

Your HVAC system is designed to move a specific amount of air throughout your home. When you close multiple vents, you can create extra pressure inside the duct system.

That can lead to:

✅ Reduced system efficiency

✅ Increased wear on your blower motor

✅ Airflow problems in other rooms

✅ Higher utility bills in some cases

✅ Hot and cold spots throughout the house

Instead of closing vents, consider:

✔️ Adjusting your thermostat appropriately

✔️ Improving insulation and air sealing

✔️ Using ceiling fans to improve comfort

✔️ Having your airflow professionally evaluated

The goal isn't just to move less air—it's to move the right amount of air where it's needed.

Most HVAC systems perform best when the airflow they were designed for stays balanced.
